Stats aren't the only thing that's important about the mount. For example, the Hippogriff gains the pounce ability at level 7 which is big for opening damage in fights. Wolves as well get the ability to automatically trip an enemy when hit, which is huge for CC and damage (if you can exploit attacks of opportunity).
its not a griffin, its a hippogriff. griffins are lion+eagle. hippogriffs are horse+eagle
Raw stats is a large part of what the animal companions bring to the table. By the way, Boar also has auto trip. It also has high stats among the animal companions. The Hippogriff being the most fragile in all ways doesn't make it very compelling.
grìphôné
rofl, so I just noticed it was only level 18 in this screenshot. I started a new Inevitable Excess game and releveled a new Hippogriff, and this time it leveled up to 19. So it's freaking bugged. If you're taking this archetype make sure to take Boon Companion to get it to 20 I guess... Uhg.
EDIT: So seems like even with Boon Companion it still only levels to 19 according to later posts?
edit - of course, this assumes that the bugs for said ability are fixed. Damn it Owlcat :P
context - just did some testing, the AoE function of the trip is not working, or if it is it's downright wonky as I've been divebombing into groups and only the primary target gets hit by a trip check.
At least pounce for the rider functions correctly if you have a skald or are going Kitsune.
BUT ANYWAYS, if Heavy landing get's fixed and the charge damage bonuses get added correctly, stats be damned this will be the best mount for a charger build
2nd edit - The stupidly high bonus that is provided by Heavy Landing and even with no feat investment and just some strength boosting the CMB bonus is nearly 60 at level 16. Also, despite certain bonuses not applying to the CMB (such as inspire rage), certain maluses aren't applying either (such as power attack and fighting defensively). I assume the reason for that is that, unlike the other trippers, the trip comes before any attacks rather than after.
3rd edit - yeah, I just did some testing between the dog, elk, Bismuth, and the griffon. If the trip is important to you, even in it's buggy state the Griffon is BY FAR the best tripper right now. It's inherent bonuses are insane.
final edit - ok, the aoe is working, it's just MUCH smaller than I thought it would be.
Until Drezen youll get a ton of value out of it for sure tho.
I took boon companion on mine because I had a dips outside of ranger/paladin so I can't tell. I'll check later.
edit - yeah, checked. For some oddball reason it caps at 19.
or am i wrong about this and every pet class will work?
Just testing a bit more here and I can't get charge to work normally with the hippoG. Spirited charge - which should double damage on hit, isn't. That's using charge option from the PC, not the mount. Anybody able to confirm ?
