Ranhild's Day - Failed before even getting it?
I don't understand this quest. Is it doomed to failure unless I knew it was going to be here?

I've just went to Pulura's Fall with the Hand of the Inheritor. I've done the other sidequests with those in the temple. The only quest I haven't done, and seem unable to do, is Odden's, where you have to find out about his family "Near Wintersun Village".

But, firstly, I've never even went there on my own yet. And secondly, if I leave Pulura Falls to go to Wintersun, I'll be unable to return.

So, as I asked at the start, is this quest doomed to fail before you even get it without meta foresight?

You don't have to leave Pulura Falls to complete that quest.

Then tell me how to do it, because guides online are very, very unhelpful. I've looked all over the map and can find nothing that progresses the quest.

I dunno about completing the quest without leaving, but you ARE able to leave Pulura and return, so long as you haven't completed the main-quest thing you're supposed to do there. Or at least you were able to last time I played an Angel path, which admittedly was several patches ago. The Herald basically serves as a teleport point between Drezen and Pulura for that chunk of the story, talk to him to get the option to leave and return.

Okay. In the outdoor area near a tree you'll find a doll (on a corpse? a grave? the floor? Can't remember, but it's there, probably needs a perception check). That item alone is enough to complete the quest. The note from Wintersun isn't actually necessary.
