Companion Respec Ideas?
So, I've got Seelah, Camellia, Wenduag, Nenio, Woljif, and Ember...and I kind of hate most of them. Some are just annoying characters (Nenio and Seelah so far) and some of them are annoying game mechanics-wise (Camellia and Ember, even Nenio is pointless with scrolls, I never use them except to learn from). Woljif and Wenduag are the only ones so far that I'm good with on both character and gameplay.

What have people respeced them too on average? I'd like to keep them lore-friendly but maybe change around their starting stats and feats and such. Ideas?

Nenio is first and foremost a wizard.
Her archetype matters little.
Just because she's a scroll savant, it doesn't mean her build should have anything to do with scroll usage.

And I'm surprised you don't like Cam gameplay-wise but not story-wise because shamans are a great class and Cam is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ person.

Agreed with mind, the shaman is a great class (for a companion)

Btw, you can only respec companions from the level you find them onwards. So while you can respec Wendu from level 1, you can only respec Woljif from level 3 onwards. Any feats and stuff he picked before that you can't respec. Even with Wendu, any feats etc the devs picked for her in character creation, you can't reset.

If you want fully customized characters, you need to hire mercenaries.

There is a full respec mod that a lot of people use.
Though for me it was very buggy to the extent of being unusable. :Owlcat_sad:

I'm sure with Camellia I just need to get used to Shamans. I just tend not to like hybrid classes unless I'm hyper-focusing on them (ie they are my main character). And as for her character, I didn't say she's a good person. But she's definitely interesting.

Yeah I've been using it. It's good so long as the companion doesn't have unique things about them (which is not common in this game so far). For instance, if you don't retrain background and deity, it defaults to question marks (and who knows what's actually going on in the code at that point). But if you do retrain background and deity, you can't pick unusual ones (like underground scavenger for Wenduag and Greenfaith for Camellia). So I'm using the mod where I can and using the in-game respec elsewhere. It's....not ideal.

I like training Wenduag or Lann as either Divine Hounds or Demon Hunters. Gives them a pet and still ok in damage dealing department. Hunters have better spells than Rangers, while Rangers have more AB and flat dps. Divine Hound companions get a lot of benefits from judgements and team feats. So that one gets really strong.

Right now I'm running Wenduag as a wandering marksman (per Nerd Commando's build). And I'm actually playing a Demon Hunter (as a tiefling, going for the whole Blade idea of "half demon who hunts demons" idea).

Hunters are really strong and often overlooked. Although I think that Divine Hound is a lot more powerful than Wandering Marksman. Divine Hound gets free team feats for both them and animal companions and gets judgements for both them and animal companions. It's a really stacked class. It only gets to pick wolf or dog, but honestly those are the best animal companion anyway. :)

Camilla. My most recent playthrough I gave her 2 levels in shaman (for the icy hex and bought the ring that adds +2), 3 levels in rogue (for dex to damage on a elven curved blade) 2 levels in barbarian/intuitive to add her Wis mod to initiative and AC and for rage, and 6 levels in fighter/two handed. I ended up giving her exotic weapon focus - elven curved blade, improved critical (and mythic) - elven curved blade, improved vital strike (and mythic). She was criting for 300+ damage on a vital strike with a moved of 40 and an AC over 40 (just using regular mage armor).

Nenio - 10 levels in wizard then the rest in Loremaster. Build her to be a buffer with Enduring Spell and greater Enduring spell. Have spell penetration and greater specialization - Illusion and expanded arsenal (mythic) for transformative. Metamagic extend (mostly for more hastes) and persistent for things like phantasmal killer and disintegrate, Makes sure you get any items you can find that increase the DC of your illusions and transformative spells.

Woljif - 8 ranks in his rogue class (just enough for another rogue trick - take slippery mind), 2 ranks in beserker-beastkin (for a bite attack and rage), and 6+ ranks in sword saint. Built him to use kukris and elemental barrage. Had to take mythic finesse to add dex to weapon damage since you need 11 ranks in eldritch rogue to gain another finesse training.

Interesting. I was just thinking general concepts but this works :)

I have to say, I'm already attached to my Giant Centipede :p

Lol. I've never used that one, but it does sound awesome.
I do value RPing as more important than stat boosting. It's a shame this game kind of forces your playstyle to statboost. It takes away from RPing.

I mean, can always lower the difficulty. I'm trying to play it as close to Core as I can, but if it starts being un-fun, I'll bump it down to normal. Tackling the (first?) tavern siege. So far, it's not the most fun. Which is why I'm thinking I don't like some of the pre-made companions.

Once you learn more about the game you get to see which types of abilities and feats can really make a difference. Animal companions are extremely powerful and can make certain encounters much easier. Spells like Grease, Spiked Pit and such can really help in the tavern siege because you can basically block off a single area for the entire fight duration. I tend to add Nenio and Woljif to the party for specifically this encounter. On harder difficulties this is a must. On normal mode you're fine just tackling it as any other encounter I think.
