* One or two handed.
* Finessable - can use dex for to hit and damage.
* Critical bonus. 18-20x2, 19-20x3 or 20x4 if you have lots of critical focused feats you will want a weapon with one of these critical ranges.
* dual wield able. Some weapons are single dual wield like double swords or the gnome hock hammer thing.
* Can your class use the weapon without extra feats?
What gonna matter the most is the material like cold iron and the alignement of the weapon. There are some spells and items that can help to add ''proprieties'' to a weapon like this relic we can get relatively early.

As for what weapon to choose, it's not easy... but a mounted cavalier would generally use a spear and/or longspear. You can check this site to give you a idea of what good unique weapons you could potentially get.

So in short, weapon choices aren't cosmetic. There are enemies that are immune/weak vs certain types of damage, but I've found that very rarely comes up in the game.
A pseudo-companion with his own quest that spans the entire game, upgrading him here & there, with the ability to change into any weapon you're proficient with.
Aside from Finnean, though, WotR EASILY beats Kingmaker in terms of itemization.
Some weapons, like dueling swords & elven curved blades, which were a little over-represented in Kingmaker, fall short somewhat, but pretty much any weapon you like, you're going to find some pretty cool variants of them in your travels.
Just as an example, in Act 5, just by following the slab-puzzle quest, Secrets of Creation, you'll find the Rushlight, a +5 Fauchard which grants you Spell Resistance after a charge, while debuffing enemy SR on crits-great option for a Cavalier for charging in and actively supporting your mages in the rear ranks-never considered the weapon an option in Kingmaker.
Or, there's the Soulshear. A +3 Glaive you get after liberating Drezen at the end of Act 2; upgraded through the crusade relics system, with several choices for the final enchantment to suit different group roles, super adaptable, and again, great for a Cavalier. :)
I never felt/wished I had another weapon damage type.
Weapon choice really depends more on your build and feats. Like if you have high Dexterity you probably want to go with finesse-able weapons. Do you want to see huge numbers? Use a weapon with a higher crit multiplier. More crits? Use a weapon with a wider crit threat range.
I did wish I wasn't so restricted to a single weapon though(I got tired of seeing cool weapons nobody in my party could use optimally). So, in my current playthrough I use, and highly recommend, the Weapon Focus Plus mod which allows specific weapon feats to allow usage of weapon groups. Ie. Weapon Focus Battle Axe now applies to any kind of ax.
