Cleric build question
I'm not new to CRPGs but I am a bit new to the Pathfinder system. I'm playing a 2-handed melee focused cleric (I know warpriest exists, I want those domains baby), and I'm wondering if it's better to dip into 2-handed fighter for 3 levels to get some melee buffs (that Chop is real nice) and then 17 levels of base cleric, or to just take 20 levels of crusader. I'm not concerned with super min-maxing, just what's more optimal.

20 cleric will be better, to not damage your spellprogression and if you go angel the later levels will be spend as caster anyway

In general, getting 3 levels behind as a caster is not great unless you get something awesome doing so.

Is getting Chop awesome? Not really...

1 level into fighter for the free proficiencies plus a extra feat can be worth it, but as a crusader, it might not be if you have already taken martial weapon proficiency and/or heavy armor.

It isn’t. Your (best in game) self buffs scale/unlock by Cleric level, as do the good Domain abilities.

Although, when you merge spell books, if you go angel, it automatically bumps you up three caster levels, which is essentially 6 character levels, as far as spells go. So it actually allows you to still be 1.5 caster levels up if you take a 3 level dip somewhere, I’d probably say mutation warrior. And it does eventually wind up giving you 10 extra caster levels, so with 3 level dip you can still wind up with 27 caster levels.

Well, best buffs award is reserved to brown furry, but yes, hurting your access to great cleric buffs is not worth it.

But your spell access is still 3 levels behind, which is more important that just caster level.

That's for tabletop, it's not gonna help a newbie, in fact it will actual disorient them, since the crpg play completely different. Please, don't give bad advice.

Ordinarily, a cleric would consider splashing 1 level of fighter for the proficiencies and bonus feat or 4 levels of fighter for weapon specialization. But a crusader doesn't need either because of his plentiful bonus feat slots and native weapon specialization access. It wouldn't be optimal for a crusader to do either splash and if you do it anyway I'd suggest taking as few fighter levels as you are comfortable accepting.

I'll put a different way than some before me put it, but the result is the same. If you're going to dip and ruin spell progression you could have just gone warpriest and taken mythic domain. Not that there's never a reason to dip, just generally speaking a 3 level dip is going to make you strictly a buffer and healer with a 2 handed weapon.

Dipping is something where you get a benefit early on but pay for it later. What you could do is dip for now then respec once your dip starts falling off in terms of usefulness.

I dipped 1 in monk as Seela but I am regretting it a little bit right now. The additional 2 AC is not worth the loss of Paladin capabilities at later levels. It did allow me to fly through act 1 though.
