Staff build help (making flavour viable)
I’m newbie to pathfinder, having only played kingmaker for about two months before wotr release, with loads of rerolls. In that time I got to know a few classes and, in wotr have been toying with my MC sacred huntmaster (works well, although I haven’t been overly impressed) and found a build I might use another time while building a merc (a martyr pally 5 / enlightened philosopher 15 with trickery/stealth and summoning spontaneous casting). Other than that I have found most builds I did for MC rerolls, companions and mercs a bit bland (although I have tested some stuff like arcane trickster rays work well). What I mean is I’m not experienced in Pathfinder nor in the owlcat game design. Even so, I am enjoying the game a lot, mostly because it allows me to flavour characters in many ways.

That said, I am looking for a build that uses staff and is dependent on intelligence or charisma. The basic idea for the character is a merchant trader of sorts, that was going around trading, defending his cart with his staff and ends up In charge of a crusade.

Spells aren’t mandatory but are a way to get things done, I guess. I was not aiming for many fighter levels as it seems dumb to use a 1d6 2h weapon with all that fighter allows. Also, light to medium armour is a not out of the question.

So far I have thought of Vanguard with Magus and a scaled fist monk with sorc (dragon form, although that might be redundant). Dragon goes a bit out of the staff wielding travelling merchant premise, as it uses a lot of natural weapons and, personally, I wouldn’t mind trying out the vanguard/magus route, due to teamwork feats and arcane component of magus, but I’m afraid I will not be able to properly deliver the concept.

That said, if anyone has any input on how I could build the “staff wielding travelling merchant” I would be thankful. As a final note, this idea comes from a PnP D&D 5e character who is a fighter wizard. It has been working well, although it hasn’t had much play time, but basically he wears a chain shirt under his clothes, is seemingly a harmless merchant but can do and take some damage and has loads of utility (his spell list has lots of language related stuff).

Anyway, sorry for the long tail explanation and thank you for any contribution.

Have you looked at the quarterstaff monk yet? Could maybe mix it with a wisdom spellcasting class.

@Cutlass Jack, I have and maybe i will have to end up with that, but I was aiming at having an arcane spell class for the biggest chunk of the levels. I feel like I can have an option to either go staff based or more spell heavy, and I wanted a mix that was at least a bit useful.
