Second, it definitely sounds like a permissions issue. My first suggestion would be to follow this page to check and fix disk permissions. Be aware that it can cake more than a few minutes to complete, if there are issues, and once it starts your computer will likely stop responding to input. So, start it running and go to the grocery store or something: https://www.maketecheasier.com/repair-disk-permissions-mac/
Finally, you might need to uninstall Wrath from Steam, reboot your computer, reinstall Wrath, and see if that works better.

BTW, one other pro tip. I can tell you especially in the Festival, things in the game slowed to a crawl ... until I lowered the graphics settings and the resolution, and things became bearable. BTW, now that I'm in the caverns I could try and put them back up ... but I think I won't. :=>
