Pet help
Hey guys, the pet thing took me by surprise, I just hit level 5 on my paladin and now I get a freaking horse buddy to level up with feats and skills etc. I also have in my inventory a little fox, dragon and cat summon? how do these little guys work? are they a temporary thing?

Give me quick run down of pets, how many classes get them? this is a really cool and unexpected twist lol

The little pets are items you put on your belt and then turn on, depending on whom you want the bonus. They're permanent as long as they're on the belt and on.

Awesome, thanks, I'll start using these. I didnt want to 'waste' them so they have been sitting there.

Are my actual pets, like my horse extra? or do they take up one of my six character slots?

Animal companions do not take up your character slots in that sense. It's not really possible to list every class or archetype that gets one. The key is to be careful when switching classes when multiclassing to make sure the pet levels stack, or that you take the boon companion feat if you're only dipping in a class that doesn't stack levels for you pet companion.

Animal companions are in addition to your overall party size limit. You can also multiclass your companions into classes that get animal companions. Which gives you 12 units to play around with. A character cannot have more than one animal companion. Familiars, the little passive critters, don't count for this limit.

Of note is certain archetypes receive special pets no one else gets: Ghost Rider gets a phantom horse, Hag of Gyronna gets a night hag and Winter Child a blizzard elemental for instance.

Also: mythic pets granted by both Lich and Azata are in addition as well. Allowing you to have both one animal companion and one mythic pet on your MC.

Also, if you are of equal size or smaller, you can ride your pet. When riding pet, most attacks will hit pet first, making your pet your armour letting you go more or all offence.

Thanks for the awesome advice guys, I think I'll play the game 'vanilla. for the first time, then I'll use the character editor so on my second run, I can level the companions from level 1 but I'll up the difficulty. One thing I loved about BG3 was being able to turn any character into anything I wanted. It was such a great idea to have that freedom. The idea of a phantom horse, night hag and blizzard elemental is so bloody exciting. This game just keeps getting better the more I play.

Just got this guy that turns into a Griffon and its epic. He is also a bit of a legend in melee and never seems to miss which is nice lol

You can also get Bismuth, A figurine for non pet classes to use for an animal companion.

BTW the horse atm is bugged - it's to do with primary/secondary attacks. Before the last patch - you could pick daredevil (as an example) and at lvl4 the secondary attacks would change to -2 (from -5). It doesn't work that way now - well it does for the base horse, that still switches over at lvl4, despite having multiattack at lvl 7.

Update - it's the black horse template that's bugged, if you have access to this, don't pick it go regular.

Thanks guys, I can’t believe how powerful the horse is. The trip ability is so broken! It’s like an auto kill. I want to see if it works with coup de grace tonight?

I’m pretty excited about these pet companions, do any of the normal companions get pets? I need to Google what classes get them

Sosiel (Cleric) can get one with impossible domain Animal mythic ability. Daeran (Oracle) can get one with Nature Mystery Mythic ability. At this point dog is probably the best companion, but there's others that are similar. Dog just has the whole package. Wolf is similar, but slightly weaker than dog. Seelah gets one at level 5. You can choose to dip Beast Rider class on her to get a different companion if you don't want a horse. I personally dislike horses and I don't want my party to ride anything. Well I'd like my party to ride dragons, but that's not possible since if you polymorph an animal companion into a dragon then you cannot ride them anymore for some stupid reason. If you change Lann/Wenduag into a Demonslayer Ranger or a Divine Hound they can get a companion as well.

Awesome, I’m a paladin so grabbed the horse, I haven’t bothered riding it yet, I just use it to trip stuff. How do I get a dog/wolf? Is there an easy way?

Dog/Wolf trips enemies automatically on hit. No need to activate trip ability. You can get this on a Paladin by taking 1 level of Cavalier Beast Rider before taking level 5 Paladin. Because the bond ability from Paladin will simply continue whatever companion you already had. Meaning if you took dog as a Beast Rider you cannot take horse as Paladin, but simply continue levelling the dog.

As Razer mentioned, if you're in act 1 , I find the best way is to dip at Beast rider at lvl3 - then just park the dog somewhere safe at each area, until you hit lvl5 as a Paladin. Don't need boon companion that way and you get outflank free (plus dazzling display if you go two levels order of the cockatrice)

How much does it cost to respec? Im level 5 currently so I’ll try this out and go for the dog. Is it worth ‘dipping’ all my companions so I have 6 pets? That sounds crazy overpowered?
