That's unfortunate. I'm doing this at level 17 just to test if it works and it's stuck at lvl 2. Kind of wish I picked it immediately if I knew ahead of time this bug, as I wanted an extra body against bosses.
Some classes/archetypes get pets at lvl 1 (some Druid archetypes if you pick Bond instead of domain, some Hunter archetypes, Inquisitor Sacred Huntsmaster, Barbarian Mad Dog, Magus Arcane Rider, Wildland Shaman, Sylvan Sorc etc.).
Nature Oracle has to pick Mystery and then will get a pet on his own level, Shamans with Nature Spirit will get companion late in game but on their level too.
Rangers and Classes that get pets via domain OTOH will get lvl 1 pet when they hit lvl 4 (this is that "-3 of the Druid level penalty") and need to take Boon Companion to cover level gap (it covers up to 4 levels difference and can be also used to cover gaps created by multiclassing into class without a pet).
Yeah, that sux - his pet won't level up before lvl 18 with how it "works" right now.
On that note, if I am Cleric level 20, would my effective CL strengthen my 9th level spells that specifically scale with "caster level"? Stupid question, but I'm weighing whether or not to dip slightly.
