Sable ranger build
WHat would be better, sable + gendarme or sable + paladin for an angel build? I guess the first one, for the flying charge thing

Ironically not. Flying Attack isn't considered as a charge. Afaik bonuses or mythic abilities that rely on the charge mechanic don't work with it either.

OUCH

Paladin it is, then, i guess. Maybe sable 9 pally 11 to get mark of justice and two combat style feats?

So, another question arises: is it worth it to take gendarme levels anyway, if flying attacks don't count as charge (albeit i read on reddit that they actually do, if you charge with the hippogryph instead of the player character - as in clicking on the pet portrait and charge with its ability)?

Personally I would do

Sable 1
Gendarme 8
Paladin 11

Gendarme gets a lot of feats, and bonus abilities utilizing charisma. 8 levels gets the mid ability for your order.

It is considered a Charge. You can check yourself - press Flying Attack into enemy, you will get +2 charge bonus to attack. Other things which increasing charge damage, should work with flying attack too - it's just bugged Owlcat code (they promised to fix that with this week's patch, fingers crossed).

If you are not dual-wielding, then do whatever. Not even a point to go more than 1 level of Sable then.
If you are dual-wielding, then ranger style feats are very useful to dump Dex to 13, and go 20 str from lvl 1. Currently playing on Unfair with full Sable, in Act 3 and having the time of my life. He attacks flat-footed AC, mobile as hell, pet aoe trips - and for dual-wielder with Sawtooth Sabers it's just amazing experience. Well, maybe weapons just too strong.

For martial Angel I would probably go 1 Sable and the rest Dual-Cursed oracle.
Starting with Battle will give you much needed free weapon feats and huge boost to initiative rolls as revelations, but your pet progression will be halted until at lvl 6 you will pick Second Mystery - Nature as first Mythic, and then at lvl 7 you will pick Animal Companion - Continue oracle revelation. This will give all levels to Hippogriff (except 1, because there is a bug currently with Oracle).

Or you can do other way around - start with Nature Mystery, pick Animal Companion - Continue and your pet will level as normal (except it will be 1 level behind because of Oracle bug), and then Second Mystery - Battle on 6, and weapon mastery revelation at 7.
This way you will have to avoid picking Weapon focus until 7, where you will get it for free.

Yeah, i was actually thinking about sword and boarding. If flying charge is back into the game (albeit not yet) might be worth to go 10 sable 10 gendarme, or 11 sable 7 gendarme 2 paladin (for that hefty CHA to saves)

If you want to play Angel I'd suggest taking one level of sable company ranger and then switiching to oracle. The nature mystery gives you an animal companion and you can merge your spellbook which is a huge advantage for any Angel run.

For other paths, gendarme is certainly a good choice as well. Other good options are tandem executioner, divine hound and sacred huntsmaster. Arcane rider is good choice if you want dimensional blade to be sure, your attacks hit and also works well with most paths. For lich sylvan sorcerer is likely the best choice, also because of merged spellbooks. Trickster on the other hand gives you the option of getting the animal domain regardless of class, making your build open for non-pet classes, such as titan fighter or sword saint.

Regardless of your path, usually you only need one level sable company marine to get the hippogriph (no, it's not a griffon).

I currently play as sable company marine/sacred huntsmaster as Aeon on the way to Devil.

I'm in the middle of Sable/Gendarme Trickster/Legend run and super happy about today's patch - those two classes have excellent synergy when Flying Attack counts as Charge. Gendarme turns Trip performed by the rider into free action via Mighty Charge (at Gendarme 11), Sable's Improved Quarry is free and Favored Enemy spell - swift, so great economy; Sable's capstone should enable other capstone's full potential and so on.

Melee Legends don't care that much about Mythic Ranks, Mythic Power Attack is the only really important thing here and there is enough feats to get whole Trip Line, Cleave Line, Trickster Perc 2 Improved Crit Line, Mounted Combat feats, Shatter package and so on.

Also, I love how, regardless of its absurd size, hippogriph doesn't have to worry about positioning (late game this tend to be supper annoying when it comes to mounted charge, without swift teleports it's a nightmare).

As for Angel Path, I would also go for Sable 1/ merged full caster with pet class.

I think there are still some problems with flying charge - specifically spear, not seeing damage increase with this

Are we talking about synergy with Gendarme though? Because Gendarme replaces Cavalier's Supreme Charge (that benefits from using spears) with Transfixing Charge - he gets triple damage instead of double with any weapon but doesn't get anything extra when wielding spear.

Just plain ranger here - can't get damage increase to show using spear + flying charge (from the PC not mount) - regular charge looks OK (still testing)

Spear build in general is a Cavalier thing. The whole controversy around Flying Attack was due to how it suppose to interact with other class' features and mythic abilities.

Unless you're talking about specific item's effects, like this one:

- those should proc for anyone.

Spirited charge working as well right?
john_boy Jul 11, 2024 @ 8:41am
Thought it was all characters, unless that's changed - I'm losing track with these patch notes :

"All characters, while mounted, now deal double damage on the first attack when charging with spears. This damage triples with Spirited Charge and quadruples with cavalier's Supreme Charge feat;"
kodama Jul 11, 2024 @ 8:54am
Oh, you're right, totally missed that. In that case it should work.

@ Dave, I'm yet to check Spirited Charge on Sable - postponed picking the feat until devs figure things out and now have to wait until next level:).
