Tridents are Polearms

So apparently the weapon training description is lying. Are Tridents considered both Polearms and Spears for weapon training?

They're treated as both polearms and spears ingame. (Also in the case of a Disciple of the Pike's Spear Training). Which differs from tabletop: there, tridents count as both spears and thrown weapons.

But since Owlcat didn't implement a toggle to throw tridents, I'd hazard a guess they simple replaced the thrown category with polearms instead. Which isn't wrong historically speaking.

Basically Owlcat simplified it as: thrown tridents are "javelins" and javelins wielded as melee weapons are "tridents"

And so on and so forth.

They also mention various weapon proficiencies in character creation that simply don't exist in game, such as the rogue having proficiency in hand crossbows or the Close weapon group including the gauntlet.

Inconsistencies in rules in this game is a large part of it's high learning curve.

I can see why you think that way, but I disagree. Thrown tridents and javelins are very different in both damage and throwing range. Two pair of pointy shoes.

They did outright replace lances with long spears though.

To be fair: Owlcat already created weapon feats for hand crossbows, bolas, shuriken, (non-staff)slings among them. It's just that they're placeholders since Kingmaker for later usage.

In the hand crossbow's case it finally got a model and animations, since Nocticula uses it in her cutscenes. Just not usable by the player.
Yeah I fell into that trap as well. Waste a feat for exotic weapons to use bolas for my potion slinging alchemist on to learn that there are no bolas

Which is odd, as a thrown weapon should be usable in melee - like it doesn´t make sense that You can´t use a javelin, axe or knife in melee...

True, but there are also rules in pathfinder for thrown weapons being broken/destroyed/spent after you throw them, and also rules for limited ammunition on bows, and long loading rules for crossbows.

Definitely more simple the way they did it.
A toggle to switch from ranged to melee would have done wonders to the halfling sling staff. As it is supposed to work just like a club in melee. No improvising or breaking of the weapon involved.

Similarly, we would have gotten throwable starknives that way as well.

Really a missed opportunity. Something that I as an avid halfling player Iamend to this day. Really hoping Owlcat will implement that ability in a future Pathfinder adaption.
Except it doesnt work that way, because a daggermaster rogue can never ever throw their dagger or starknife in WotR.
the only ranged wep i can think of is a sling staff and throwing axes and javelin and dart? . imo they should have implemented more.

Make starkife ranged so i can make arushalae a ninja .
