But at 6th lvl You gain the smite ability, which lets You have +4 attack bonus against the sworn enemies, half the inquisitor level as damage bonus, and bypass any DR of that enemy.
You get to choose one of the alignments and they become your sworn enemy. Say you pick lawful good, you can choose either evil or chaos to be your sworn.
Then as Trip G says you get a smite ability at 6th and extra charges every 4 levels after, that only work on your sworn enemies. Basically to help you vs boss/tough enemies.
so the actual sworn enemy thing does nothing? seems a bit pointless and more just a type of roleplay fluff
I would have thought you would get maybe a +1 attack bonus on sworn enemy types
An example: level 11 seelah gets mark of justice, which makes her smite work for you, add your smite on top, sosiel with community domain guarded hearth, along with standard buffing is a good way to punch up vs those real nasty enemies/bosses.
Else i´d rate it more as roleplay fluff as well. If going for inquisitor, You probably want to go with the one which gets the pet, or the sanctified slayer, which gets the sneak attacks - if it´s about which are the strongest. While imho the judge into Aeon is perhaps a nice roleplay choice, even if not super strong as inquisitor. The sworn enemy guy looks perhaps more of some kind of fanatic, but i actually don´t know what he loses compared to the base class. The sworn enemy thing looks rather like a benefit of it. Basically You have judgement, bane and the smite - all as swift action. Which isn´t too bad as some buff against the stronger enemies, while You always have the solo tactics to buff Yourself a bit more.
And yes - that the sworn enemy apparently does nothing on it´s own is underwhelming, but the thing it does for the pathfinder rules, like +1 attack for AoOs, isn´t that great either, and i expected something like You said as well, as it seems to make sense. It´s a perquisite for the smite though.
