Reason to be wary of alignment is if you play classes that have alignment restriction
Paladin - Lawful Good
Druid - any Neutral
Monk - any Lawful
Barbarian - any non-Lawful
Cleric and Inquisitor to be in alignment allowed by their god
Then it comes into play with Mythic Paths, where you need to be in allowed alignement in act 5 to continue their progression, but you can also refuse Mythic and become Legend that has no alignment restrictions.
Hellknight is also restricted to lawful, assassin to evil.
About alignment restriction. Any character switching in an alignment incompatible with the class can't level up in that class anymore unless they go back to an allowed alignment.
For divine spellcasters with restricted deity alignment, hellknights and paladins, they also lose their class divine powers and spells (access to domains, smite etc.).
