They are just 4 pairs of weapon slots, you can use a turn to switch from one to another in combat.

You can usea slot for melee, another for ranged. A mace or hammer against constructs.

They're just slots, you do whatever you want with them.

Thing is: you cannot pull out and use any weapon out of inventory while in combat. You can only switch between those in your weapon slots.

Switching weapons on the fly in TBC does waste a round. I usually find one weapon for each character and leave the others blank, and I guarantee you most people do.

I tend to keep weapons of different damage types (slashing/blunt/piercing, one of them usually being cold iron) plus a ranged weapon early game to help overcome DR. it only takes a move action to switch them so if you're already beside your target you're not really giving up an attack. Once you hit 6 BaB too it's not terrible to give up 1 attack when your damage output is low enough that DR is still a slight issue. Past Kenabres I tend to downsize to my main weapon + a ranged weapon. Sometimes it's just nice to have ranged weapons in more crowded doorways

In other, similar games, one melee + one range, as you say. BG games? Web, entangle, arrows from a distance. Pathfinder? Selective spell + melee.

The very top squares are your current right hand and left hand contents. The bottom two squares are your alternate right and left hand gear. That could be two two handed weapons, Four daggers if you're a dual weilder, totally empty for monks usually etc.

ok cool

just in case you didnt notice it.... on the action bar to the far right you should see an icon with the weapon your currently using.... clicking on the expand icon will bring up all 4 weapon slots and from there you can select and switch active weapon without having to do so from the inventory....

Weapons are heavy. Don't equip 2nd/3rd/4th weapon sets for no reason, because you may go up a "weight class" and find that person unable to move as far on their turn.
