I haven't played Kingmaker myself, but have a friend who did. He tells me about little references here and there, couple of characters, but nothing major that would impact this story.

True.
Kingmaker is one Pathfinder module and WoTR is another Pathfinder module.
You can play them separately. The Pathfinder title given to both game is actually a reference so folks know what RPG system/setting they use.

You can play this game without Kingmaker to its full content and enjoyment.
(and if you like RPG-s i advise you to.)

The story is not related. But it is set in the same world. Kingmaker in my opinion is easier to get into because you actually do have less options so you're not paralyzed with too many options. However WotR is more polished and has more options so you can go crazier with builds and people like having more options.

Storywise, one of them is a crusade as the title implies, while the other one is founding a kingdom.

While you don't need to play both I'd highly recommend playing Kingmaker first actually. Unless you're a fan of the pathfinder system from pen and paper I've heard of some people loving this game but then having a hard time going back to Kingmaker just because Wrath has more QOL stuff, more bugfixes and more options for builds. Owlcat can't patch Kingmaker any more either due to losing the license to their old parent company (forgot the name). That being said if you don't mind losing any of that stuff then play this first and if you like it go back and play Kingmaker later

Absolutely not. I never played Kingmaker and WOTR is one of my most favorite games of all time. It probably helped that I had a good deal of D&D experience beforehand.

I agree. I played WotR first. After playing Kingmaker now, I hate it and would never have tried WotR if I had played Kingmaker first.

No. Those two are separate stories in the same setting.

You don't need to have played Kingmaker for narrative reasons, but you kind of do need to understand the Pathfinder 1E system as it is incredibly convoluted for a newcomer. Otherwise you're just going to stare at the level up/character creation screen wondering "wtf?".
