Worst - Greybor
Failing that, Nenio. The "magic pixie dream girl" trope doesn't do anything for me, and her personal quest makes me want to commit crimes - and not the fun ones. Good buffbot though.
Trever is more interesting but you don't meet him until late and also his spec, while backstory reactive, sucks
And a pox on your houses for sneering at Greybor! He's a good quiet character. If you think he has no personality then you just didn't talk to him, or see him interact with Ember and Woljif. Honestly, using the remote companion dialogue mod from toybox is something I consider essential to enjoying the game
Otherwise, I think Regil is more akin to lawful stupid at times, which overshadows his otherwise shining moments of pragmatic villainy.
Nenio was fun, but as you said, she should have gotten better focus on the reveal/end of her questline. Which, really wouldn't be that hard to add in I feel like, just a few moments where she shows discontent with how little she remembers of her old life, hidden behind decently high perception checks.
But of the three, I think Greybor is my least, while Nenio is the one I would want more for.
Camellia is probably my most hated character. Her "secret" was not at all subtle, and it was annoying that you can only get to know her AFTER that event. There's no variance to her character, like others with Aru redeeming or falling or Sosiel saving or killing his brother. She's just, awful. It also annoys me that she inserts herself into 2 of the tabletop characters, as a child of Horguss (which her quest in act 1 is literally just his quest with her tagging along,) and the mage she kills at the very start, who was supposed to be with our group.
I reluctantly put Seelah in there. She was just really unnecessary. I know she's a paizo original, but I just don't find her particularly interesting. But she's also not particularly offensive, so I give her a pass.
If I'm being honest, none of the characters really stood out to me very much in this one, I think they could use a lot of work.
Regil
Rapier psycho girl
effeminate Cleric boy
Worst characters for me.
Daeran and Ember about the best and Seelah close.
Sosiel and seelah are pretty boring but...tolerable
Nenio is easily my least liked. She just annoyed the hell outa me.
My train of thought reading this was:
"Nu-uh, this post was asking about companions"
"Oh wait it's asking about characters - not just companions"
"Oh wait, Galfrey can be a companion... I guess."
"lol I just realised I have never done a playthrough where I recruited her, because screw that"
I like Galfrey. She serves a useful role in the story, and I like her flaws. I appreciate her as a character, and enjoy the feeling of hating her. Nobody wrongs the protagonist quite as badly as Galfrey does, which makes her conflict with the player uniquely personal.
He tried to 1v6 the party and pulled the "heh nothin personelle kid" line. That was so unabashedly and unbelievably stupid that any respect I could've ever had for the character washed away.
Lann- too much self pity.
Nenio- too many anime "super smart" character cliches.
Ember- not really her fault, but I don't like the child warrior concept. Like the dialogue to recruit her- who but an evil person would do this? Also maybe the pacifist is a particularly bad choice for a child soldier? A pacifist, mind you, who is completely capable of burning people alive from the first time you meet her.
I’m aware of the ludo-narrative dissonance. Unfortunately my understanding and awareness doesn’t help me much.
Agreed about Sosiel. I wish they had made up their mind which direction they were going with him.
I feel like the game never shows us why Greybor is supposed to be a good assassin. If you attempt the tower early, the party can be clever and use a fallen pillar to take out some of the forces. He however runs in with an invisibility potion, stabs, and leaves. It's the same if you wait until the tavern defense.
It also doesn't help that he obviously would not win most his fights if not for the knight commander. The dragon? Stood no chance. The assassin's house? Wouldn't have passed half the skill checks. Vs the other assassins? Mythic ranks are the only reason he is left standing. He barely survived his failed assassination attempt at Drezen (again, the KC was the distraction).
My angel run had him go back to his family (so I knew about them). My demon run had him become part of the guild. Still, nothing really stood out about him.
Wendu really made me think when she killed two of my guards in town. My KC really had to meditate if Camellia's "hobby" was worth me dropping her on the spot. When I see Greybor, there is nothing. I get he is supposed to be a professional, but i just cannot see what makes me feel he is dangerous or exceptionally good at what he does. I blame that on his writers. I like the concept but hate the execution.
Tomorrow: dumb, vapid, and no understanding
Next day: I am as effeminate as possible today for no apparent reason.
