Does barding show on all mount types?
Was thinking of making a cavalier, but am unsure if barding shows on all mount types, or only horses. Also, how viable are non-horse mounts for a Medium-sized character?

They show up, yes. Even on the centipede that cannot be ridden by anyone (and the barding model reflects this via a removed saddle).

Many animal companions become large as they progress in levels. Mastodon, wolf, bear, boar, dog, elk, smilodon and triceratops can all be ridden by medium sized characters at 7th level. Prior to that only small gnomes and halflings can ride them.

Also leopard, monitor lizard and velociraptor start off as small and become medium later on. So only shorties can ride them.

Non-horse mounts are very viable. I ran a party that had 4 characters mounted on wolves, the sheer amount of tripping they did was insane.

Who would win? A hundred year old powerful lich or a couple of dogs? Obviously the dogs! Always makes me laugh when I fight Zacharius and he gets tripped by a couple of dogs and destroyed.
Thank you for the responses, very helpful.
One more question. If I were to take cavalier, and take paladin at some point, would it give both mounts, or does it restrict you to one?

Just one - if your Paladin wants a non-pony, grab that 1st Cavalier level before your Pallie has to chose its' mount. On the other hand, if you want that PalaPony, bring in the Cavalier levels later on.

I turned Reg into a Hellknight/Cavalier and he's been hiding a smile ever since.

Damn, was afraid of that but understandable I suppose. Thank you.

You can still do Cavalier first, even if you want PalaPony - you'd just have to respec at the point you get the pony, and on respec do the Paladin levels 1st, get the pony and then grab the Cavalier levels. But if you wanted the magic pony boni, the Cavalier levels wouldn't count toward those. It would only be a SemiPalliePony.

But in the end it's only one animal companion/mount *period*, right? Across all classes?

Yes, though you can get a companion/mount from your mythic path in addition to that (Aivu from the Azata path can be mounted and rode, IIRC, and the skeleton from the lich path is technically a "companion").

Interesting, thank you.

Keep in mind though that Aivu "auto-levels" - you have no control over her stats, feats, spells etc. You only have control over those aspects of a normal mount, not one obtained from a mythic path. Same goes for the Triceratops mount you can obtain through an item. You only have the option of what items you give them as gear.
