Many animal companions become large as they progress in levels. Mastodon, wolf, bear, boar, dog, elk, smilodon and triceratops can all be ridden by medium sized characters at 7th level. Prior to that only small gnomes and halflings can ride them.
Also leopard, monitor lizard and velociraptor start off as small and become medium later on. So only shorties can ride them.
Just one - if your Paladin wants a non-pony, grab that 1st Cavalier level before your Pallie has to chose its' mount. On the other hand, if you want that PalaPony, bring in the Cavalier levels later on.
I turned Reg into a Hellknight/Cavalier and he's been hiding a smile ever since.
You can still do Cavalier first, even if you want PalaPony - you'd just have to respec at the point you get the pony, and on respec do the Paladin levels 1st, get the pony and then grab the Cavalier levels. But if you wanted the magic pony boni, the Cavalier levels wouldn't count toward those. It would only be a SemiPalliePony.
Yes, though you can get a companion/mount from your mythic path in addition to that (Aivu from the Azata path can be mounted and rode, IIRC, and the skeleton from the lich path is technically a "companion").
