How do mythic paths work?
So I've heard about the "mythic paths" in this game, but without actually having played them, I'm having a hard time grasping how they actually work, especially since it seems very different from the tabletop game.

Are they mandatory? Does the game force you into choosing a specific faction? What happens if you don't choose a faction? I can't find an answer to stuff like that.

They function like 10 additional "levels" outside of what classes get via gaining experience. Mythic ranks are plot driven and can only be advanced at certain story points throughout the game.

Yes, they are mandatory. You first start off as a mythic hero without a "faction". Then you must pick one path out of six (if you previously met their requirements). However there will be an opportunity to give up on said path and effectively become mortal again. That being Legend.

The DLC's Through the Ashes and Treasure of the Midnight Isles provide separate campaigns without having to madatory pick mythic paths though.

What happens if you don't meet the requirements for any when you need to pick a path? That part really confuses me.

If you play WotR, you'll soon realize that it's these mythical paths that make the game so varied and interesting. Because each mythical path has its own dynamic and special story, as well as quests and characters. This increases the replay value enormously.

So you'll soon come to appreciate the Mythic Paths, although - as Schlumpsha wrote - at a certain point in the game there is an option to forgo the Mythic Path and instead become a mortal hero, which comes with additional leveling up connected is.

I'm still confused though, if they all have requirements, what happens if you don't meet any? Does the game just send you out to complete one?

You would still qualify for either Angel or Demon. They are kind of a fail safe which you come into contact with inside the prologue. Any other mythic path has specific criteria you have to meet for them to become unlocked.

IE: Russians.

What hole did you crawl out of, you troll?! :P

Good to know!

Whether or not you meet the specific criteria that Schlumpsha talks about depends primarily on the answers you give at certain points in the game.

Hmm. Are there any mods that let you unlock the "just a mundane (but powerful) hero" option earlier?

I don't play with mods myself, so I can't say anything about that.

But to be honest, I would be surprised if it were, because the mechanics of the game can't actually work that way.

None. Legend is a late mythic path. You can unlock all paths at once via mods, but you'll run into complications down the line. Game doesn't know how to handle such unexpected things like giving you mythic ranks even though you already gave you a path which abandoned mythic ranks altogether.

Better to just play as intended. Or play the already mentioned DLC's instead for such roleplaying style.

That does make sense! I'll need to give it some thought (and block that increasingly nonsensical troll who seems to be stalking my threads)

you start off having angel and demon as default unlocked.... and throughout the game you can unlock others... but your first 2 mythic levels are just "mythic hero".... your 3rd is where you branch off... angel, demon, lich, azata, trickster, and aeon.... later in the game you have a chance to "branch" off again or stay the same path.... and if you unlocked em then you can also get devil, gold dragon, swarm that walks, or reject your mythic altogether and take the legend path...
