Monk class doubt
So, why is DEX recommended when creating a Monk? I'm creating one to play from the ashes... and I've never used the character. My idea is to build a pure fist fighter, so I was gonna invest mostly in STR and WIS.

If I'm getting the armor from wisdom instead of dex, and I don't wanna use ranged weapons, do I get any benefit from DEX?

All monks builds I find online seem to give it priority, so I don't know what I'm missing.

You get benefit from Wis and Dex for Armor class. You get both. Keep in mind you only get the Wisdom bonus for AC when you're not wearing armor and are either unarmed or using monk weapons. Dex you get all the time and helps you qualify for other feats, like Crane style, which is really good.

There's also necklaces you can get that will let you use weapon finesse for punching if you wanted to not invest in STR. Not sure how practical that is. Maybe others have tips.

Yes, I considered the necklace, but I have no idea how far in the DLC would I be able to get it... If I can get it at all. And until then, with a low STR the melee will be really bad.

I've been able to get crane style on level 1 without problems with Dex 10 (+0).

Ok. Since, I'm planning on playing unarmed and unarmored... I'll keep it like this. Str + wis. I'll see how that works...

Thanks mate.

It's just extra survival, like already mentioned. Also good for initiative, since you want your tank to go first and position to get aggro anyway.

Dex 13 gives you access to the Dodge feat (+1 AC), which then opens up Mythic Dodge (+1).

Initiative is also very important. You can get in a lot of trouble when the enemy gets the jump on you.

You can also take weapon finesse to use your dexterity bonus to attack and can either use a amulet of mighty fists - agile or take mythic weapon finesse to add dex bonus to unarmed damage (could also take 3 ranks in rogue which gives you weapon finesse for free and at level 3 use the finesse training to apply dex to unarmed combat.

But str/wis monk does allow you to take up the dragon style feat chain which is fun if you build to intimidate.

Both routes are valid, it just depends on what style you use. Personnaly I like the scaled fist as a str monk, going str/cha with dragon style and demoralizing enemies.

For Through the Ashes the STR Monk is way better. Especialy since you are not going to find any Amulets of Agile Fist and 1-4 lvls DEX Monk is weak, and at those lvls are most of DLC.

Wow, I completely missed he was doing that this was a build for that DLC. Yeah. I wouldn't build for Dex in that case. Unless he plans on doing the rogue thing as well, not even sure how many levels that DLC goes through.

do you get mythic ranks in the dlc?
does mythic weapon finesse work with unarmed attakcs?

I missed that too. That DLC only goes 5 levels. I'd probably consider a Fury shifter if I wanted to punch things through that DLC. Would also work great for a Str build.

You don't play mythic heroes in that. You play the underpowered non special adventurers trying to survive while all that mythic crap is going on.

Mythic weapon finesse does work with unarmed attacks. So long as you have weapon finesse (and improved unarmed combat of course).

Dex Monk is even worse in that you have only 15 point buy. So you cannot stack so much AC as in main game.
