Military buildings (e.g. barracks) boost recruitment, and you can build 1 per fort.
Economic buildings (e.g. supply centre) boost supply income, and you can build 1 per fort.
There is one conflict: you can't build an inn in a fort with military buildings. The only choice you will ever need to make is if you want a fort to boost your economy or recruitment.
The troop types you have access to is determined by throne room decisions you make; you are limited to one type from each branch (e.g. if you picked shieldbearers then you will never get to recruit significant numbers of champions) because Owlcat wanted to ensure that no one has any fun.
When you take enough forts, you'll get an Outpost to Bastion decree. After completing that decree, you can select one outpost (must have at least 3 building slots filled), and there will be an "Upgrade" button (same screen that has the "Enter" button). Click to upgrade, then go in and build a teleportation circle.
If you all of the available demon forts that are available in Act 3, you'll be able to upgrade three outposts to bastions and one bastion to fortress. I advise starting the Bastion to Fortress decree when you're about to cross the Act 3 point of no return (or the Sword of Valor research project if you haven't yet completed it.)
As noted by others, placement strategy doesn't really matter, but it also doesn't hurt to take advantage of the bonuses that are available. You can use a tic-tac-toe arrangement for your recruitment buildings (main barracks, main archery, main stable, main spell casters later) and unit buff buildings (arsenal, smithy, etc.) in order to maximize the adjacency bonuses.
As to the buildings in Drezen or outposts - try to build ones that give you resources first. Energy points income from Sanctuary is useful too, for making artifacts.
Units in Crusade mode are expendable, Setsuna Shy just needs a bunch of them. Then he becomes a living god, destroying hordes of mythic demons in a blink of an eye.
But I had some fun. Mostly because a certain little Dragon wanted a cookie.!!!
As other said build stables asap. Try to build 1 of everything to learn and so you can unlock everything as new building come available over time. The upper right zone of drezen I put all my recruitment and booster buildings. Left row for big 2x2 buildings. Then the bottom a mix of 2x2 and 1x1 buildings.
You need to fill up 3 out of 4 spots in an outpost to get a decree to upgrade it. Once you upgrade you can then build teleportation circle in an outpost
