Constant Crashes
DM of 20 years here. I love this game and the tabletop versions. But I just cannot enjoy this game. My rig (which plays hundreds of other steam games just fine, from old to 2023 AAA titles) crashes CONSTANTLY to desktop. Sometimes within 2 seconds of starting the game, sometimes juuuuust far enough in to accomplish a thing or two and just before saving (4-8 minutes).

Is there anyone out there that had a similar case of DOZENS of crashes in a session, that they managed to solve?

I'm relatively competent with computers, here's what I've tried;
1) All the normal steam BS (verify integrity, reinstall game, etc, etc)
2) Disable antivirus
3) Close unnecessary apps
4) I've gone as far as going on a task manager hunt and closing EVERYTHING not critical.
5) Turned off anything and everything that has an overlay, including Steams overlay (Discord, AMD software, steam, etc)
6) My pc exceeds the minimum requirements, greatly in most categories, with a middle of the pack video card.
7) Maxed the fan on my video card, in case overheating was an issue

And a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ more. Any other hints or tricks? If I reboot my PC, and go on a task hunt, I can usually enjoy a session of an hour or more, but sometimes that is ineffective as well, and will just start the crashfest on a fresh boot.

Its extremely frustrating.

Did you update your video card driver?
QcGreywolf Jun 24, 2023 @ 8:24am
Yea, its up to date. Windows updates and all my other software I did an update run on a bit back.

I would try to run the game on much lower graphical settings and see if it was making your video card too hot. I was running on max settings and it caused my card to run > 110C, and repeated crashes. I had to dial back on the graphics settings to avoid the crashes.

Worth a try, although it wouldn't explain the 3 second crashes or the crashes in the menus. I'll try running it on ugly settings a few times and dial it slowly up.

Unity games are sensitive with 2 things. Unstable memory overclocking, unstable CPU overclocking.
I can say bad things about Wotr optimization in general (getting sometimes fps drop from 60 to 4 in level-up screen, inventory screen etc.), but it NEVER ever crashed. Same was in Kingmaker.
Hope Rogue Trader will be as crash stable as those two, but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ inventory and character screen fps drops are annoying and need optimizing.

I wonder if it is something as stupid as different memory brands. Ugh, that would bother the heck out of me. I thought I got all the same cass latency, speed and all that. What grinds my gears is it's only WotR.

Try to set 60 FPS limit in Control Panel of graphic card for this game.

I never had a problem with crashing but the game does go apeshite on your video card.
Consider downvolting a bit. Everyone should do it technically, make your card run at 90 percent power- does wonders for temp issues.
Also then you can cap the game to say 80 FPS and within a lower temp threshold and max settings, and card stays within reasonable temps. I don't have any stability issues either.
It's not hard to do with a GPU manager like Afterburner.
Not sure why the cards are factory set to go balls to the wall out of the box. Maybe if your card burns out quicker, more money for the GPU people.
Less power wont hurt your card either if you're worried about that.

Just tried undervolting, limiting max power and ramping the fans up even further. I don't think it's the GPU unless it is physically faulty. I suffered through about 9 more crashes, for at least 4 of them the GPU temp wasn't even over 50C

Yeah if your temp is that low it's not the GPU
Maybe your CPU needs some new thermal paste? Not sure what kind of cooling you have on it but doesn't make sense especially stumped now that you say you're not having issues with anything else.
Does your PC use the Nahimic audio in the background? Its known to cause issues with many apps. That or maybe another app is causing a conflict

I've got 110 hours in this game, zero crashes.

Can you list your specs? E.g. mine

3800XT CPU
6700XT GPU
32GB DDR4 (at 3600mhz)
B450 board

Any overclock's happening? CPU/GPU/RAM?

I know you've noted other games are stable and just this one crashes. Not sure if you play other Unity based games, they hate memory overclocks or flaky RAM. You could try something like memtest86 (you download it and use something like RUFUS to make a bootable USB stick out of it)... that will test your RAM outside of Windows, run it overnight and see if you get any errors. If you do that would be why the game is crashing.

You'd need to consult your BIOS manual but if your RAM isn't 100% stable then you could reduce the speed it's running at or make the timings looser (usually a CL rating, lower is faster, and higher is slower).

You could also try giving your RAM a tiny bit more voltage in the BIOS (one step, whatever the minimum is will be something like 0.1v). Could even be worth trying this temporarily just to see if it makes any difference, a little more volts often stops stability issues, albeit at the expense of slightly less lifespan on your RAM and slightly more heat produced.

CPU - Intel Core i7-5820K cpu (3.3GHz)
GPU - Radeon RX 5700 XT
RAM - 32GB DDR4 3000
MB - Asrock X99 Extreme4
HD - OS on 256GB SSD, Game on 1TB SSD

Nothing is overclocked, and I in fact tried underclocking the GPU (no change). I've tried a fresh reboot and a fresh reboot with everything non-critical nuked (task manager, end-task).

AV is set to disabled when gaming. Pretty much the only thing open is SteelSeriesGG software for spatial audio. And now that I say that, I am going to try killing that and seeing if there is a change. Its the last thing I can think of.

Trying the mem test today when I head out for some meat shopping, its time to fire up the smoker and smoke some MEATS! Also trying the memory overvolting to see if that helps.

Your specs definitely aren't an issue, I just upgraded my PC November of last year but before that my last rig was running a GTX 760 and an older intel i5 quad core (forget the exact model, it's been a while) with 16gb DDR3 and it ran the game fine at the lowest settings without crashing.

Looking at what you've already tried I only have 1 weird suggestion I can think of to try. Perhaps try turning off cloud saves. Maybe some way your game is communicating with Steam's cloud service is causing issues for the game. It's a long shot for sure

Mem check came up with 0 errors. Eh. What a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. I'm opening my case and changing up my SSD configuration and blowing some dust out. I've been stalling on updating my 256gb SSDs to TBers for a while now. I've had some larger SDDs just sitting on my desk for a couple months.

You sure everything else is working fine?
