This game has no spyware of any kind, there's an opt-in about the game giving data for bugfixing but it's 100% optional. So you have nothing to be afraid.
Yes, Appflyer was a thing they added at one point. If you believe them, it was removed and will never be reintroduced. If you don't believe them, then either they're lying to appease the crowds or will sneak it in anyway at a later date, and nothing they say will change your mind.
The game itself is honestly great, bugs and all. Before the whole thing went down, more or less everyone presently ranting about their security was loving it. If the security thing bothers you though, play it safe I guess.
"...According to that same Reddit liaison, "it took less than an hour" after the devs became aware of fans' vitriolic response for the removal patch to begin prep. What's more, the liaison says "all plans for usage of this software have been shut down, and it is not coming to Rogue Trader or any Pathfinder updates in any way or form.""

And tbf anything they could have done could be seen in an equally sus way. I mean, intentionally or not they were apparently about to break EU law with it. Wanna think about how much damage that would have done to them as a company?
Immediate removal was the only sensible thing they could have done, aside from not having leaned on the tracker in the first place. Damage control, public appeasement, dodging legal issues with a not-insignificant portion of the playerbase, lots of legitimate reasons to strike it as soon as possible. It's people's continuing paranoid bias that wants to see it as shady or with some ulterior motive.
Do you honestly believe that?
If you mean GDPR, then Appflyer is compatible with it.
That's the one. Appflyer itself was compatible, sure, but the way Owlcat decided to include it wasn't. No Opt-out option, you had to allow it or you were no longer allowed to use the program you potentially had for 2+ years. That was the core of the justified backlash.
there are other companies and such that dont react that quickly and still dont to their consumers despite the complaints and possibly months of protest... (like bud light drama for instance).... Owlcat I think has been doing a good job listening and if you see their responses in the posts they are willing to admit it was a bad decision and are sorry... and they even admit that they would not do it for future games how this was that big of a learning lesson for them and seeing what the players wanted...
they admitted that they didnt see this as spyware and i did some digging into the details of the app itself it was something that companies like Amazon uses and others I cant recall off top of my head.... but since the players didnt trust or like it whether it was really spyware or not was irrelevant.... they shut it down instead of trying to stand on that hill and defend keeping it in the game because its what the players wanted...
the players spoke... the devs listened.... and the devs choose to side with the players in this debate.... if anything I wish more companies would stand up for their consumers like that... instead of just treating consumers as just numbers...
"What are they really hiding?!" "If this is what they told us about, what are they NOT telling us?!"
They made a mess, they cleaned it up.
This is a small development team that made a single player game. They're not out to conquer the world. They have nothing to gain by deceiving a few thousand nerds; neither the proliferation nor the platform of this game provide a platform for any REAL abuse.
Now, if EA or Amazon were to use something like Appsflyer...
Oh wait, they do.
No hate here, love the game, just highly confused.
Edit:
Don't get me wrong, I didn't even know about the whole thing but generally scroll through EULAs and this one was pretty weird. Opened the update news and saw it, opened the shop page and saw the raging people, jumped to forum for more informations. Cool that they listened and reversed the decision, I am just irritated why that is still in the game and blocking me from starting a new game after a long time.
