While they had NO business installing this. It's NOT spyware or malware. Please learn what those 2 things are.
What it basically was doing was the same thing Facebook does. It's not illegal, but it is immoral IMO.
Sorry, I can't help but laugh at all the people who are freaking out over this because I know for a fact that 99% of you are already giving away way more data via other common programs then Owlcat was looking to collect. The number of people who take every step needed to avoid giving their data away in modern society is basically zero, after all. Its like watching someone who already got their arm cut off complaining about someone coming by and taking a swipe at the empty air where their arm used to be. Which doesn't mean it was a cool thing to do (obviously there should have been an option to opt out), but its still a clown show to watch people running around acting like they just woke up in a tub full of ice with a kidney missing and adamantly swearing they will never use their products again over it even as they keep using other products that collect much more data then they were going to.
Seriously, the ridiculous hysterics I am seeing people fly into over this are getting old. Especially since the people posting things today are no doubt the kind of people that pay so little attention to security that even after it was openly stated in the patch notes that it was being installed they have only just now realized it days later. God only knows how much actual malware and spyware has been installed on your computer without your knowledge while you panic about data tracking software you were upfront told was being added only for it to then be removed.
Since I belong to the privacy community, I won't even think about this game again.
Yes, they may have removed the software, but they are probably just testing the boundaries. This is always how it starts.
People who don't care about privacy, who have never dealt with it, complain more than anyone else.
Folks, you can use social media and still be anonymous and privacy friendly. That's always one of the dumbest things I read in terms like this. I deal with a handful of browsers with different settings, addons and privacy friendly mail providers to stay anonymous and private.
If you don't want to deal with it, fine. But don't make stupid takes like "I hope you don't have social media or smartphones." That just shows you don't understand the whole point.
Or: "You are simply overreacting". I repeat: If you don't care, that's totally legit. I'm not here to tell you to care about your privacy and your data. Just stop pretending you know what you're talking about while insinuating something to your counterpart.
tl;dr: If YOU don't care, then move on and leave the people alone who do care.
Regardless there are still thousands of demons that need to explode senselessly.
You belong to the 'privacy' community? Thats hilarious. Bro, if you want privacy disconnect your PC from the internet. Try running a web of VPNs and pray those VPNs arent selling their IP lists, or are not owned by a conglomerate. The only thing stopping anyone from finding you for any reason, is the amount of $$$ it would cost and an actual desire to know anything about you.
You're only exposing your stupidity
Im curious, which VPN service are you using to login to steam? is auth tied to your cell phone or are you using an email providers? if so which one? Learn me privacy friend.
The difference is those are free services, and that's how they make their money. Video games do not need this type of thing. Oh, I won't use anything google what so ever.
