Always Targeting Main Character?
I'm playing on Core, my MC is a Mutagen Warrior ranged attacker (Trickster), and I usually always have the second highest AC and close to the highest saves in my party.

WITHOUT FAIL, everything targets me, ALL. THE. TIME.

What gives? Why is this a constant thing? No matter what I do, regardless of the fight, everything just blitz past all my companions and just beelines straight for my MC.

Anyone else have this issue?

REAL, TRUE, TECHNICAL ANSWER.
Based on 2 years of experience

It works like this.

When a combat starts, all enemies will go target who started it. If you charged with your tank, they will go to him.

If you just come out of a cutscene, or you're in a ambush etc. then your MC will the the one who started the combat by default, so they will all rush him.

In RTWP (the way this game was built, the wrong one) you can move your tank around the enemies and get their aggro.
In turn-based (the way these games are meant to be played) on enemies turn they will walk past your tank or whoever is on their way, to target your MC, who is the one who started the combat session.

Conclusion.
Due to how the game works (it is not a bug, it is the base mechanic of the whole game), having a MC tank makes things A LOT easier and avoids A LOT of reloads.
Having a squishy MC can be very troublesome at times.
Again, this is how the game was build with RTWP in mind.
Rogue Trader and other Turn-Based games will not have this issue.
Just, now that you know about this, adapt.

P.S.
Ignore all post about high/low AC, enemies targeting weakest char or whatever. Rules are simple. Targeting who started combat, OR the closest one.

Your char might be attacking too early or is not well positioned (if an attacker is in direct line of sight and in walking range, he usually gets targetted). Try to engage with a frontliner that is aligned so that mobs have to trigger attacks of opportunity if they want to pass through, or better use your frontliners on choke points like doors, small corridors etc., so that enemies can't pass through.

But more importantly, crowd control enemies. You'll get targetted at one point or another, so just mess wirh them from the start.

Yeah, I use a lot of CC and I try to keep my initiative as high as possible, he's also back line (archer), but like I said, they just blitz my line taking multiple attacks of opportunity, just to charge my MC

I've had this as well. Even invisibility doesn't help. Nor high Stealth. Even when Lann starts the fight and Seelah is out in the open and my MC is in cover.

Just searched because I just had the same thing, enemies b-lining straight for my ranger PC, when she would be nowhere near top DPS/threat, I honestly wasn't expecting to find such a recent thread. Never happened in act 1, but has been happening a lot more in act 2. Even with mobs my PC had not interacted with at all, charging straight for her on the backline taking heaps of aoo's without a care... but that doesn't help me when my PC dies lol

to be fair we are the main guy so we should die first makes sense to me

Scripted fights are like this. Worst is in Dresen, as your main character can be standing 2 sceens behind , with invisibility on and these mook archers will attack him no matter what

yeah the game has a bunch of bugged missions and weird things going on like the guy above me said. mabey it will all be fixed but i doubt it its too much stuff. and if they do fix it itll be to late because baldurs will be out and these guys will be (or already are) working on a new game. i also doubt that kingmaker is fully bug free but some games have that

I think on turn based the AI looks at who attacks them first. Most of the time.

This happens no matter who goes first--I've had a full round where my MC misses every shot (so no damage to the target), while 3 of my other companions do crazy damage. No dice, enemies STILL charge me.

It's pretty frustrating.

critical miss? oh wait thats a different game isnt it.

It does happen pretty often that every enemy goes after your MC whit zero regard for their own safety, i usually start most fights by having Ember use protective luck on my MC for that reason.

Even if you missed, you still *attacked* them first… I reckon that’s enough for the AI, after all.

If you pointed a Bow at me in RL and started releasing, I wouldn’t care that the first shots missed, I’d only care about how long it’ll take you to *not* miss, thus I’d take you out ASAP before that happens.^^

As others said, try playing in TBM and sending in high AC characters, i.e. Tanks first.

The AI is hardwired to go after high AC first if it is also in range, so if your Ranged MC has one of the highest AC, sorry to say, but you built a wonky char and now have to live with the AI thinking you’re a tank, heh.

Plus your MC also has a very high damage potential, and while I don’t have proof that the AI takes this into consideration, it does make a lot of sense nonetheless… you have among the highest AC *and* very high potential for damage, and if that doesn’t spell „priority threat“, I don’t know what does.

try starting in stealth , see if it helps.

Yes, and it's honestly quite annoying when games do this. Targeting should make sense, not be based on who the player character is.

Supposedly it depends on who attacks first and/or who gets seen first, so select your melee characters and send them to attack first, before anyone else. That might help.
Malaficus Shaikan Mar 12, 2023 @ 12:28am
In my experiance:
The target the one with the lowest ac and the least risk of getting hit.
Trapping them in melee is enough to keep them of my wizard.

It also helps my wizard ac is insanely high.

Think of it like this.
Who would you attack.
The one you can quickly kill, that trows fireballs at you or the one who can take a billion hits but doesnt do much damage.
Now same senario expect the one who can take a billion hit is right in your face and if you move away you get hit.

Ai targets those closes with the least amount of ac.
Mage armor + shield helps alot.

It does help.
A trick i learn from a youtube video.
Charge enemies and they general wont go after your range.
