Another problem is when you press down the right thumbstick to see what the item in inventory you are over is, the pop up many/most times covers the item so that browsing through what you have is clunky at best, since you cannot see the inventory page b/c of the pop up over top of it.
Combat controls work, although it seems to lock the center of the view to the active character with no ability to scroll around the view, which can make things a bit difficult.
The game locks you into using controller or KB/M on launch and you cannot switch without reloading the game. This is also unfortunate since you could use mouse/kb for inventory.
However, the largest problem with controller support is how it completely changes the UI, making all the text boxes, management windows, etc huge with large text and little information density. For example, with controller you cannot see your equipment and inventory on the screen at the same time. When KB/M is enabled, you can. You can see so much less at once when controller mode is enabled. It is obviously console/TV interface and scaling, but it doesn't work great on a monitor.
If you want to play it on a TV from distance, then it would be playable but clunky to use. If you want to play it on a monitor, it is really quite frustrating since there is no reason for the UI limitations. I switched to KB/M after trying to play with controller for a few hours. I've played other CRPGs (Divinity Original Sin 2 and Wasteland 3) fully through with controllers and had no issues. WotR just isn't that well done.
