It's not super optimised mind you, but it will work on 'Normal' and below.
Just if you want to use auto, you need to stick to it. If you go and manually change anything, the auto will no longer work. It's an all in type of deal.
Auto level generally speaking is perfectly serviceable on Normal and below, if you play above that you might have a hard time, also I think above a certain difficulty setting auto level is disabled.
"Preset People" ?
All chars in the game can be freely adjusted according to your wishes. You can (re)skill them however you like...
