Do I have to level up companions?
Like in the topic, do I have to level up companions and babysit their progress? I'd like to play this game, but I'm always turned off when I have to progress everyone except just me. The best example would be Neverwinter Nights where I could just focus on building up my character while teammates would level up on their own.

Also, if there is an autolevel, do I sabotage my gameplay with it or is it decent enough?

You can use auto-level up for your companions.
It's not super optimised mind you, but it will work on 'Normal' and below.
Just if you want to use auto, you need to stick to it. If you go and manually change anything, the auto will no longer work. It's an all in type of deal.

auto level for your companions as what the above poster said. Auto level for your own character I believe does exist as long as you are using the base class and not any of the archetypes.

Auto level generally speaking is perfectly serviceable on Normal and below, if you play above that you might have a hard time, also I think above a certain difficulty setting auto level is disabled.

You can play a full custom party if you have sufficient money to hire enough mercenaries. Note that some encounter areas require a specific companion in your party.

"Preset People" ?

All chars in the game can be freely adjusted according to your wishes. You can (re)skill them however you like...

Premade companions all have subquests with extra monsters and loot and only needed when doing them. I'd say go main character a couple merc and save a slot to rotate the premades as they get their quests if you want to play that way and see everything.
