Mounted Combat
So I recently started this game, and now I discovered mounted combat while leveling up my Paladin companion... am I missing something is is just REALLY good?
It gives my paladin superior movement + "extra healthpool" + extra attacks (mount).
Now I consider respecing my main as a cavalier, as they are focused on mounted combat.

Any tips for doing that. Are there classes that can somehow do it better or feats that you recommend?

Skalds make mounted combat pretty insane. If your going to focus on mounted combat with several characters, get a skald. Focus on the animal totem, which ends up giving pounce to everyone affected by your song. With side effects like x1 multiplier for crits, + extra natural armor AC, +attack bonus, etc.

Holy molly that sounds really good.

Mounted combat pretty much turns the game into easy mode. For Player it's hard to beat a demonslayer ranger who get massive AB and damage vs 90% of the game. Great buffs for them and their pet and can choose dog or wolf on top of that. Dog and wolf are considered the best because they trip automatically. Cavaliers have powerful charge attacks that 1 shot most enemies in the game and even more so with skalds giving pounce. But cavaliers are more reliant on charges while still doing good damage without it. While other classes are more reliant on utility and still doing good charges. Also depends on your mythic because few things are stronger than a mounted merged spellbook oracle.

Honestly any class or subclass that has a pet is pretty damn good. Could take hours to pick apart which one is just the flat best due to them all doing different things. Be forwarned once you go mounted combat it's hard to play go back to playing a solo pleb with 2 legs.

Consider giving your paladin a single beast rider cavalier level before getting the paladin mount. That way you can trade your horse for a far superior dog. Dogs are the best animal companions, wolves are close second. Both have a trip attack that is very powerful, especially in melee focused groups.

Also make sure, your companions get mounts too and learn combat reflexes early on. Sosiel and Daeran can get mounts in their core classes with impossible domain and second mystery respectively. Lann makes a good divine hound hunter or drovier druid. Regill works best with one level beast rider and sohei for the rest of his career. Your skald mercenary can ride Bismuth, the triceratops you find during the siege of Drezen at the beginning of Act III.

There are other pets that also trip automatically. For example Raptor does and has 9 attacks per round.

The raptor is definately a great damage dealer, with all its attacks. However its the secondary bite attack that it has, that trips. That is at a -5 penalty for being a secondary attack, so it wont land as often.

Different pets shine stronger depending on what the character is.

Take for instance the divine hunter class. Your pet gets the celestial or fiend template. Allowing it to smite a good/evil entity. A velocirapter has the highest charisma, so it can get the most out of that ability. Or Lich, who can turn the pet into undead, A raptor has the highest charisma/con score there.

They're all fun. I'm glad it we have this stuff in the game.

Okay I hope you guys know how to help me with this then, I know of the Dog and Wolf (dunno why Dog is better than Wolf but :D), but I already have a Dog in my Team (Divine Hound) and went with a Smilodon as a Beast Cavalier.
Now I'm missing the 4xclaw attacks it should have and I read that its a common bug. But that was from 1 year ago. Is this bug still in the game or did I miss something completly?

I've noticed that pets with multiple attacks per round aren't getting them if the rider isn't capable of multiple attacks per round. If you're talking about an unmounted smilodon it should get multiple attacks when it takes a full round action to attack - that is when it doesn't have to move before attacking, or if it has pounce it can charge and get all it's attacks.

I'll fire up the game real quick and check it.

I thought the pets that wornt working before enhanced edition were fixed after it. I dont remember the smiloden being bugged.

I was testing it unmounted and mounted, both only 1 attack. No claws. I gave it power attack. Does it have something to do with this?

I just googled and looked through steam disscusion to see if there was a known bug and I found like 3-4 entries from 1 year ago reporting about Smilodon not working, also the mastodon would only use gore or something. Dunno, I as of now, have a Smilodon that isnt using its paws T_T

Dog has more Str so lands hits slighty more and lands trip more often. Wolf has more dex and can move farther though that's pretty irrelevant.
Raikon Jan 2, 2023 @ 3:12pm
As for wolf and dog comparison. They are a bit different. The dog starts with higher natural AC, more stregnth. The wolf starts with more movement speed, and more dex. I prefer the wolf
Raikon Jan 2, 2023 @ 3:13pm
Furies fall, adds stregnth and dex together. So trip landing is the exact same for both wolf and dog.
