Honestly any class or subclass that has a pet is pretty damn good. Could take hours to pick apart which one is just the flat best due to them all doing different things. Be forwarned once you go mounted combat it's hard to play go back to playing a solo pleb with 2 legs.
Also make sure, your companions get mounts too and learn combat reflexes early on. Sosiel and Daeran can get mounts in their core classes with impossible domain and second mystery respectively. Lann makes a good divine hound hunter or drovier druid. Regill works best with one level beast rider and sohei for the rest of his career. Your skald mercenary can ride Bismuth, the triceratops you find during the siege of Drezen at the beginning of Act III.
There are other pets that also trip automatically. For example Raptor does and has 9 attacks per round.
The raptor is definately a great damage dealer, with all its attacks. However its the secondary bite attack that it has, that trips. That is at a -5 penalty for being a secondary attack, so it wont land as often.
Different pets shine stronger depending on what the character is.
Take for instance the divine hunter class. Your pet gets the celestial or fiend template. Allowing it to smite a good/evil entity. A velocirapter has the highest charisma, so it can get the most out of that ability. Or Lich, who can turn the pet into undead, A raptor has the highest charisma/con score there.
They're all fun. I'm glad it we have this stuff in the game.
Now I'm missing the 4xclaw attacks it should have and I read that its a common bug. But that was from 1 year ago. Is this bug still in the game or did I miss something completly?
I've noticed that pets with multiple attacks per round aren't getting them if the rider isn't capable of multiple attacks per round. If you're talking about an unmounted smilodon it should get multiple attacks when it takes a full round action to attack - that is when it doesn't have to move before attacking, or if it has pounce it can charge and get all it's attacks.
I'll fire up the game real quick and check it.
Dog has more Str so lands hits slighty more and lands trip more often. Wolf has more dex and can move farther though that's pretty irrelevant.
