Which DLCs are part of the main game
Other than the free ones anyway, It seems some of these are stand-alone.
Just finished the first game and probably a bit too burnt out to play this right now, but will come back to it soon. Anyway I was wondering what DLCs are "essential" or at least incorporated into the main game
Thanks

The Treasure of the Midnight Isles is incorporated into the main story. The other two connect to it in some way, but can't be played directly from the main story. None are essential.

The other two you mention, are they similar to Varnhold's Lot, where when complete you can import choices into the main game?

Full disclosure: I have no idea what Varnhold's Lot is, just going off your description.

Through the Ashes is like that, yes. I don't know how much they change, since I purposefully got the worst possible ending and therefore had the smallest impact.

Inevitable Excess gives you some stuff depending on the difficulty you played on, but otherwise has no impact on the story, as far as I know. Bare minimum, you get a new ability.

Varnhold's Lot was a DLC in Kingmaker

One is a side story, where you play one of the masses, trying to make it to safety at Defenders Inn during the initial invasion. Completing it provides a minor advantage to your main story character during the early game period.

The other is a late game side mission that can be played by either the main character and his motley crew, or a new bunch rolled up for the DLC - completing it at varied difficulties can result in some higher end gear becoming available earlier in the game, during future play throughs and can have some impact on late game plot and outcome for some mythic paths.

Figured as much. I haven't played Kingmaker yet.

It's good, story is good, fights are nice and tough if you play real time challenging or Hard (not to mention unfair)
Kingdom Management in the first game is a sore subject
I'd probably be playing this now but I can't afford the DLC yet
Probably burnt out also like I said from the first game - nearing the end wanted to get it done with already
Maybe the DLC will go on sale in the time it takes for me to play DOS2

The side story- when should it be completed to get the main game advantage

Clarification on Inevitable Excess - as mentioned above, you can

a) Create a new character.
b) Have your main story character play it, but only a main character that has already completed the game.

The Inevitable Excess DLC "begins" near the very end of the game - essentially right before the final fight. However, if you pause your main story at that point, you still can't import that character into the DLC.

As for the bonuses in the main story, you get the Inevitable Excess ability at the beginning of the Sword of Valor chapter (Act 2) and at least one potential bonus item is available shortly thereafter (thus far, it's the only one I've found, but I played two levels below Unfair).

The Through the Ashes item is minor and you get it during The Wardstone Legacy chapter (Act 1). The actual time you get it depends - on a blind run, it'll probably happen well before you expect it. If you already know how to proceed efficiently, you might actually skip it (and I don't know what happens in that situation).

So you have to complete the game once and get an ending for Inevitable Excess to be included?
If the case probably pointless to buy it right now

You can create a new character just for Inevitable Excess and play it first, if you want. I definitely do not suggest doing that if you care at all about the story, but you would get the main story bonuses.

This game is very re-playable (presuming you actually like it).

I presume I will. I liked Kingmaker a lot despite its flaws.
However if I wouldn't have dropped difficulty from hard real time to challenging in edge of time I'd still be playing lol
Seems much more DLC will be released

From Exccess, aside the buff ability, you can get 3 items during main game by beating Inevitable Darkness optinal boss.
You get 1 item by beating it on Daring, 2 on Core, 3 on Hard.
One of the item is Ring of Deflection +7 in beginning of act 2, that is on lvl 5-6.
And you can get helmet (it is meh) only on Lich Mythic just for finishing the DLC.

As far as I know it does not add ending slide to main game.

Through the Ashes happens during prologe and beginning act 1. Chronologicaly it starts right after first big cutscene.

I don't remember the exact language used in that notification, but you get the new ability at the beginning of Act 2. You get the ability at the beginning at the beginning of the fifth crusade which can cause some confusion. Act 3 is titles "The Fifth Crusade", but the actual declaration of the start of the 5th crusade is at the beginning of Act 2.

Prologue: Trapped in the Darkness
Act 1: The Wardstone Legacy
(You get the Inevitable Excess ability as you transition from Act 1 to Act 2.)
Act 2: Sword of Valor
Act 3: Fifth Crusade
