So yes, scribing scrolls is super useful.
I'ld buy the Level 4 kit in chapter 1 then upgrade to Level 8 when you can and avoid any intermediates.
In chapter 1&2 I like Nenio making Haste scrolls that Wolfjit can cast as a way to get Haste in party without taking Nenio. Stoneskin scrolls give a bit of protection for rear-rank characters without needing diamond dust. If you have UMD on a melee MC then there are various personal spells that could be useful (Shield, Divine Power, Effortless Armour, Expeditious Retreat, Lead Blades).
Made scrolls are often a lot better than found/bought scrolls because they have higher caster level.
If we turn around and look at it strictly from a cost analysis viewpoint, it's still pretty worth it once you get to midgame. The Level 4 Kit is a one-time investment of ~14k gold. Each scroll you craft with it requires 2-3 ingrediants that are commonly found for free or can be bought for less than 25g each. 4th level scrolls resell for ~700g. At that rate, selling a mere 20 scrolls, made over 20 rest periods, recoups the initial investment and anything past that is pure profit.
The next natural question is which potions are worth crafting?
Mage Armor for your tanks and Brilliant Inspiration for damage dealers, but I never bother with crafting potions.
Ones that you don't use regularly but would like to have handy. Lesser Restoration for example.
It is worth thinking about ingredients. Try not to use ingredients in short supply that you need for useful scrolls.
Also, you want your best Knowledge(World) person on the job to get food bonuses. Do you want to waste a Mythic ability to get Mythic Brew Potions on them?
You dont need anybody to prepare food then or any other tasks and can use some random mook for it (special merc or char who you do not like - Nenio for instance)
