Heavy crossbows deal slightly more damage (by 1 point on average), but also weigh more (an additional 4 pounds). In the tabletop game, crossbows take longer to reload than bows (move action for light, full round action for heavy), as well as the heavy crossbow having a higher range increment (120 ft compared to 80 ft). But that wasn't brought over into this game.

In Wrath, there's no difference in loading times between bows and crossbow, so you can make full attacks with crossbows. unlike in the table top game.

Heavy crossbows live up to their name. Is an extra 4 weight worth an extra 1 average damage and some range to your mages? Can Nenio even lift it?

Looks and a d10 for damage instead of a d8. They're basically the same thing, and are trash compared to some of the later-game bows. Only one that ever stood out to me was the Oracle's Misery light crossbow you get early on, shame I never bothered rolling an Oracle to make use of it.

If You run Powerless Prophecy Oracle and increase crit range then it could be useful to set enemy staggered yes but usually Oracle has much better things to do than launch his Xbow

Unless the firing character doesn't have a significant strength bonus or marital weapon proficiency to use bows. But, yeah, late game those folks usually have better things to do then shooting little sticks at opponents that mostly bounce off anyways. But I remember there being a few really nice high end crossbows in the game.

So Daeran, which is who I normally toss it to and forget about. But their's a little problem with the idea; Staggered isn't passed along unless it's the first round of combat, and the curse does nothing at all on later rounds. So it's quite literally a nothing effect for powerless oracles. In fact, of the curses that are in WotR, the only ones that theoretically do anything in combat are Blackened and Lame. Sadly, Ember's archetype apparently doesn't count for the crossbow.

Yeap - Heavy are better, but they weigh more.
Light crossbows are needed for characters with low strength in order not to exceed their load limits.
Sometimes even 4 poods can make a difference if you're carrying a full set of gear with strength below 10.
Poor Daeran with his 7 strength. It's already encumbered just carrying around his ego.

kinda makes me wish there would be automatic crossbows with drummagazine and explosive bolts like a certain gnome had in another crpg.
