you need to have them equipped before the battle or else it will cost an action to take it from your inventory during a battle

Follow up dumb question to hit all the bases, you are clicking the arrow icon to open your Belt menu on the right side of the hotbar right?

People use potions in battle?

As ArchaicReaper said, click the most right arrow on the hotbar. That opens the usable items bar. You can even do this outside of combat.

There's even a couple of potions of Heal, IIRC. I used them in the battle against The Other, to keep my companions standing.

Wrong button, my mistake. Click the big "B" above and to the left of that. That's your "Belt" bar. Along the top of the hotbar, in the middle, you'll see an "A" for Actions and on the left an "S" for Spells if you have them.

At low levels, definitely. Also if your party doesn't have a healer.

I tend to stay away from usables. But healing during combat is a bit awkward to do during RtwP. Tend to be too late anyway.

When you only have 6+con HP, the light woulds cure potion is amazing.

It is. but I don't use them in battle. Just spam them from the inventory afterwards as necessary :)

you should at least in the maze.... is not like you have anything better to do with your move action before level 5 (with the exception of magi and kinetists but thats only the main character) ... well skipping the move action is a bit worse but just a bit.
there is also a mythic feat to make potion using a swift action? I am not sure cause its so bad i did not even pick it up to try it.
