How many spell slots does Arcanist have at level 20?
The game indicates 4 for all levels, but I'm level 16 right now and the game says I should have more slots than I do. So, how many slots will I ACTUALLY have?

Doesn't that depend on your casting stat?

They have the same slot progression as sorcerers learn spells:
https://pathfinderkingmaker.fandom.com/wiki/Sorcerer#Spells_Known_per_Level
And the same number of daily casts progression as wizards have slots:
https://pathfinderkingmaker.fandom.com/wiki/Wizard#Progression_Table

Only the latter are affected by their casting modifier and by abundant casting.

What's the formula for the number of spell slots? According to the links Mindeveler posted, I should have more slots than I do, even without taking stats into account.

His links don't really apply to the arcanist.

It's a weird class with spells per day and spell slots for memorized spells being tracked separately.

The idea is that it's a wizard in the sense of having lots of ability to learn spells, but it's a sorcerer in the sense of the flexibility of casting spells.

Not sure that that one answers your question...

Ah, checked the pathfinder forum.

"You get additional spell slots for casting if you have high Intelligence, but spells prepared per day does not get modified by ability scores."

That's the thing: at level 16, I should have 5 slots for levels 1-2, 4 slots for levels 3-5, 3 slots for level 6, 2 for level 7, and 1 for level 8. Instead, I have exactly one less slot for levels 3-7.

"Additional spell slots". "Additional" being the key word here. The game outright states I should have 1 more slot than I do for levels 3-8.

hmm... bug?

That's one possibility. I wanted to see if someone had leveled Arcanist to 20 and could shed some light on this issue.
Mindeveler Jul 22, 2022 @ 1:51pm
Level 20 Arcanist has the same number of slots as Sorc can learn spells, i.e. 55444333.
Maybe the progression is slower though, not sure about that.

Stats are irrelevant. Nothing in the game can increase the number of Arcanist's slots, only the number of daily casts.

"You get additional spell slots for casting if you have high Intelligence, but spells prepared per day does not get modified by ability scores."
That is wrong.
You don't get slots. Nothing affects Arcanist's slots.
You only get more casts per day.

Where does it say so?

When I go to class progression and hover over a specific level. See below. I right-clicked to have it expand into its own window.

I do have 4 slots for level 1-2 spells, but I only have 3 for level 3-5, 2 for level 6, and 1 for level 7-8.

It's a problem in terminology. "Spell slots" for the arcanist is referring to casts per day, which is stupid because any common sense would dictate otherwise. Blame Paizo.

At any rate, you've chosen an archetype that gets more casts per day, but can prepare fewer spells.

The stat line in your screenshot, comparing against pfsrd, that's the number of casts per day a level 16 arcanist gets. As for number of prepped spells, you should have 5-5-4-4-4-3-2-1 base.

So what's the formula for how many extra casts I get based on my stats? Because those numbers still don't match.

That's the table for bonus spells.

https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/hybrid-classes/arcanist/

And the arcanist's page (which has both spell/day and preps/day tables) for reference. From which your archetype should be giving you an extra cast at each spell level, but one fewer spell prepped for each.

Alright, that math checks out. Thanks.

Actually, no, it doesn't. If the numbers shown on my screenshot are indeed the base number of casts, then I have FAR too many casts.
