Bards are proficient with simple weapons plus longsword, rapier, shortsword and shortbow. That's it. You would need to pick the Martial Weapon Proficiency feat on your Bard to access sling staffs as a martial weapon rather than a exotic one.

Or play as a Skald. Those get access to all martial weapons free of charge.

Halflings don't have racial weapon proficiencies.

Take a look at the Mwangian Hunter background. Wiki says it gives proficiency in slings but since there are no slings in the game, I wonder if it gives a slingstaff proficiency ingame? Can't check for you atm so try it yourself.

They do. It's just that the game doesn't mention it. Create a halfling, choose any class with access to martial weapons and add a sling staff to your inventory. You will be able to equip it no problem.

Really have no idea why Owlcat never properly documented this fact. Or why the weapon itself isn't called "Halfling Sling Staff" for that matter. Whereas Orc Double Axe, Gnome Hooked Hammer, Dwarven Waraxe/Urgrosh or Elven Curve Blade all have their proper racial prefix in their name. This is a long standing reported bug, going back to the alpha days.

According to Fextralife they don't, according to Fandom they do. Elves, Half-Orcs and Dwarves have a trait "Elf/Half-Orc/Dwarf Weapon Familiarity" that allows the exotic weapon varieties as bonus proficiencies. Halflings have no such trait.

Whether that's actually true in the game I can't verify right now. Apparently OP doesn't have it, based on the existence of the thread.

Oh ok, that mostly explains it even if it's not ideally communicated.

The game's communication isn't great. And it doesn't even explain why it's communication isn't great.

Like how the fighter still can't take Hand Crossbow proficiency....Only the rogue class grants that.

Or how even with the Shield Bash feat, weapon focus (shield bash) still requires martial weapon proficiency...

tbf 'halfling sling staff' sounds like a tiny weapon, while in reality its massive, its so big in wotr halflings wielding slingstaff look just weird

from my understanding op is a bard with only simple weapon proficiency, so of course he won't have sling staffs available

he would need martial weapon proficiency like someone else already suggested, but he did not know that because he thought being able to use racial weapons is a racial feat without other prequisites

but whatever i already played linzi in kingmaker with a slingstaff and used a halfling barbarian in wotr

That's more of a case where Owlcat modeled them after the medieval staff sling (aka fustibalus) and put for some reason a slingshot on it.

The actual halfling sling staff on the other hand in tabletop is supposed to be a short club with a sling attached. Plus, you can even wield it as a simple weapon dealing bludgeon damage equal to the "club's" size. But that wasn't implemented by Owlcat either. Just like the throwable starknifes.

When I see "halfling sling staff" my brain pictures a 6 foot tall barbarian, slinging halflings from a staff ....If only.
