How to talk to Companions in Camp?

Everyone has mentioned needing to camp out in the wilds and talk to your companions to get special dialogue for quests and romances. I go into a random map that is not the city set up wilds camp, done. But then what? I can set people to do their chores, and group banter will trigger but I cannot seem to figure out how I am suppose to have PC talk to them or have them talk to PC.

I.E. Lann is supposed to have a really early dialogue about having him read you a book in his romance that only happens at camp. No matter what I do, that does not seem to happen. I've even camped with just Lann and PC and gotten ambushed for my troubles. Lann either talks to himself or to Finnean. I know on my first playthrough I missed out on some Daeran dialogue to trigger his true romance that was camp locked, but again, no matter how many times I camped out in the wild and not in city or on world map, I got nothing but usual group banter. What am I missing?

Lann always needs a little longer. For one of his dialogues you have to be in the headquarters.

I've never heard of that and I did most of the romances, even when I didn't want to. And the only thing I had to do is to talk to the npc in the city (or tavern, crusade camp, nexus depending on the chapter, whatever is the main base at the time). And I'm pretty sure it's the only way to converse with them.

You might just not be far enough in, either in his romance or in the overall game. If I remember right, that book-reading scene was in something like chapter 2 or 3 for me.

Honestly, as long as you're resting regularly through normal gameplay and keep your LI with you, you shouldn't have too much issue getting the scenes you need. Especially with Lann, since he doesn't have any "True Romance" requirements like some others. I've never had much issue with it, anyways.

I jsut had one such event I believe - it occured autoamtically at end of camp directly in area (not on global map)

You generally can't initiate conversations with companions in camp. Some events trigger on their own, while others require you to talk to them at the Crusader's Camp, or in Drezen. In Act 4, some conversations require you to be in a specific area of Alushinyrra.
