Touch attack vs. ranged touch attack
Does the game treat ranged touch attacks as a subset of touch attacks or as an entirely separate thing?

I'm looking at the Steady Finger right now, a ring that adds a +3 competence bonus to touch attack rolls.

If RTAs are treated as a subset of TAs this would apply to rays etc. and be an amazingly useful item. If they're not and it does not apply to rays it's at best extremely situational (some magus builds could get decent use out of it, maybe).

They are the same. Ranged Touch Attack generally just means it's not melee range. It's just there to tip you off on the fact, and it might have some small impact on whether the spell triggers an AoO if used in range of a one capable of doing so. Melee touch attacks specifically don't trigger AoO's afaik but that might also just be Magus using Spell Combat.
Touch attack is for melee attackes and is uses Str or Dex with weapon finess.
Ray is the same as ranged touch attack and uses dex,

If the spell says ray or 'ranged touch attack'. Then it is a ray and range is >0. If the spell only says touch attack, then it is a melee touch attack, range should be 0.

When selecting weapon focus or critical feats, you need to be careful to pick the right one, usually ray,

I know what TAs/RTAs are and how they work, what I want to know is how this game in particular treats a bonus to Touch Attacks.
They are two different things. Rays or touch attacks.

You'll be hard-pressed to find a ray attack in this game that is not also a ranged touch attack. And the ones that aren't are not affected by AC either so the point is moot.
Ray and 'ranged touch attack' are the same thing, neither is a 'touch attack'.

Think of 'touch attack' and touch attack as homonyms. One is a noun claus describing an attack type and the other is a noun plus adjective describing attacks types in a colloquial fashion rather than a technical one.

So I finally got around to experimenting with it.

The ring really DOES work with ranged touch attacks, which makes it an EXCELLENT item given how much of any offensive caster's damage output will come from these.

And the game is straight up obsessed with touch attacks.
Came looking for an answer for the exact same question for the exact same reason, I wanted to sue the ring on ember but didn't know if it would work! Thank you very much
If "Touch" bonuses are working with a "Ranged Touch", will a Ray bonus stack with it?
Touch bonus works on ANY kind of Touch attacks ( Ranged or Melee )

Touch attacks is like the type.

Ranged Touch attacks and Melee touch attacks are the subtypes. They differ in that ranged uses Dex and melee uses Str, by default.

It is also notable that Reach spells can transform melee touch into ranged touch.
