WotR's plot flow is better than Kingmaker in my opinion. But WotR is also as epic fantasy as it gets. Some who prefer a more classy fantasy setting usually find Kingmaker more appealing.
In terms of game mechanics, WotR is far more complex: more classes, more archetypes, more races, mythic ranks, multiple paths to become a supernatural entity (Angel, Gold Dragon, Azata, Aeon, Legend, Trickster, Devil, Lich, Swarm that Walks and Demon), and even mounted combat. But this also means that new players become far more overwhelmed than with Kingmaker with its fewer mechanics.
It is really up to you.
Kingmaker has a lot of lush, green environments mixed in with the usual dreary ruins and dungeons.
In Wrath...well, it starts in a post-apocalyptic hellscape and gets worse from there.
There's a scant handful of maps that don't look like they've been hit by multiple nukes followed by a plague demon sharting all over the remains and the mood gets a bit depressing.
In Kingmaker there's a strong theme of building and growing. In Wrath, you'll establish your home base but that's as far as any improvement to the region goes until the epilogue. Instead of building a home, you're the invader conducting raids into hostile territory.
I kind of preferred Kingmaker thematically for those reasons, even though as mentioned in terms of mechanics, characters and other details Wrath is an across-the-board upgrade.
Wrath has more options, Mythics where you can become demigod. More reactivity. HoMM V instead of KManagment.
If you want to eventually play both, go Kingmaker first. If you WotR go first you will really miss things like QoL features, more races and classes.
Kingmaker is harder and/or more complcated in managment of kingdom, combat is easier. WotR is harder and/or more complicated in combat department and building character, HoMM is easy.
Wrathmaker has much better character customization and class options. Also more interesting companion quests. Arushlae is interesting, fire is cute with some funny interactions with other storyline major players.
Second, the expected power of party is lower, with no epic powers. Which means less bullcrap enemies, less resistanses, less saves and AC, and less difficulty swings. Although you must be prepared for them even in Kingmaker, since level of party power is still relatively high when compared to tabletop - 2 extra people in a party, 10 more ability points and much higher wealth are no joke.
Non-buffing casters are generaly more useful in Kingmaker since their powers work more often.
I completed Kingmaker twice on Hard, but even one playthrough of WotR on Core broke me.
Shhh, you can't say things like that. You'll summon that guy who believes everyone should be using the same exploits he is and when you do casters are unstoppable so any discussion of the game or its mechanics must assume everyone is building that way.
