Question about Beast Totem rage power

Since lesser beast totem adds two claws as an attack option, what happens to the weapons you are wielding?
The first upgrade adds natural AC and I was thinking of stacking it with a tower shield, is it possible or the AC is only granted if you use the claw attack?
(the idea was to have this tower shield tank with guarded stance and beast totem for the dodge and natural AC bonus, on top of the shield bonus)

You only use the claw attack if you have a free hand or aren't holding a weapon. You get the ac bonus while under your rage effect, and it stacks with any other ac bonus.
