How different is this game's story from the Tabletop RPG?
Hello reader!

I've tried to research this information online but only found incredibly vague and uninformed articles from sites like Screenrants saying things like "it's different because not every character is voiced" which is... hilarious. What I'm interested to know is how the story beats differ between the game and the tabletop! Does Drezen still play such a major role? Is one player in the group expected to be the 'commander' and undertake a mythic path, or is it more communal among players? Do the main antagonists like Nocticula, Areelu, Galfrey, and Iomedae still feature? Are party members like Regil in the books?

I have so many questions. I absolutely adored playing this game, and I'd love to know how much of it was Owlcat's improvisation from the books and how much of it was original source material.

Now, the important thing you should know about official modules is that almost all of them provide a story outline, combat encounters, several main NPCs (note that there are rarely any lines written for them. Just how they should feel, act and what motivations they have) and that's it. DM/GM is expected to do the heavy lifting and fill in everything in between the combat and rare story pieces.

With that said, Owlcats stayed pretty faithful to the original story.
There are some changes, but they (imo) improve the story be either fleshing out characters or adding to epic feel.
E.g., in the TT module, Deskari never attacked the city - it was Storm King (pretty powerful Balor, but not a demon lord).
Destruction of the wardstone showed you stupid flashbacks instead of what owlcats did.

As for your questions:
Yes, you still retake Drezen and use it as your keep;

All players get to choose from one of 6 mythic paths (owlcats completely redid those, FYI. TT mythics simply wouldn't work in CRPG realms or would be too much of a pain to implement properly from mechanical standpoint. Plus, there are almost no personal story related to those);

Nocticula, Areelu, Galfrey, Iomadea, Irabeth, Anevia and similiar NPCs are in the game.
Most of the party members are not, tho. Aside from Sosiel.
There are also some references. The elf that Camelia kills at the begining(you find her near a body) is a riftwarden who is supposed to accompany PCs through the dungeon and then help during the bastion part;
Interesting, thanks so much! That's a really fun easter egg with the elf corpse at the start, I never thought anything of it - but I imagine people who played the module will have enjoyed it. I've never played the tabletop game and I had my second ever D&D game just last weekend, so the world of tabletop RPGs is still very new to me.

Does the story outline provided in the module also cover Areelu's interactions with the party, or was that something Owlcat wove in?

Arueshalae is in the tabletop, too, if I'm not mistaken.
