Planescape: Torment kinda fits the high fantasy vibe, but isn't really about powerfantasy. For that Torment: Tides of Numenera might be a better fit. Even if it isn't of the fantasy genre per se.
Planescape torment
Solasta
In the non medieval fantasy category
Wasteland 2 and 3
Arcanum
the shadowrun series
wizardry 8
Edit : I almost forgot : gloomhaven
Small developer. Fantastic results.
It's better than this game, because it's balanced. The writing is still atrocious, however.
===
Wasteland III is very fun. The writing is dark and twisted at times.
Nominated for RPG of the year.
===
If you are into Mass Effect then you might enjoy Elex II.
Small developer. Big game.
===
You haven't played Dragon Age Inquisition? It won Game of the Year.
Even though it's an action-adventure, it does have the 'real time with pause' feature.
===
I enjoyed Neverwinter Nights II, but it's too old to recommend.
===
Greedfall is good for a short, action-adventure style, companion-based game.
===
Can't believe you haven't played LOTRO.
LOTRO is also too old to recommend, but you can play it for free.
If you are into those old Star Wars games, then you might like it.
It was the best MMORPG that I ever played.

Few questions or qualms conserning the most intresting games named above:
Solasta; Took a good look at it, enjoy the 5e combat, but most of the reviews say its exellent combat but very poor story telling. Also a bit sad about missing classes (R.I.P warlock)
Neverwinter Nights: allways was unsure were to start with this one since it has so many DLCs
also from what i can gather its not really party/companion bases? (you can only take 1 with you?!?)
Wasteland 2/3: Very Intriguing to get into especially Wasteland 3 since it seems more "streamlined" though they seem pretty detailed mechanics wise.
Expedition: Rome: Also very intresting been thinking about that one since the sale though, im not sure im a fan of the campaing army management (didnt like it in Wrath, and only did it for the lore bits and items)
Baldurs gate 1: Not sure i can get into it due to its age, even with its enhanced edition. BG2 was already a struggle at times but got saved due to exellent character and story writing.
Dragon Age Inquisition: Been told that main story and especially companions are exellent,
but the main story is gatet trough onbligatory side conten ( wich i absolutely despise) and is very mmo at times (fetch quests meaningless side quests collection activities)
Been thinking about Dragon age 2 since it seems much tighter in scope but has alot of haters/negative reviews.
Shadow run Honkong: How good is it compared to Dragonfall (which i enjoyed very much)?
The one big question that concerns all the above mentiont games: How good is the party / are the companions in them (apart from dragon age inqusition).
Are they just stat sticks and cardbord cutouts or can i expect mass effect/ BG2 / Kotor / PF level companions? and if yes in which of these game is this the case?
Yes, the game is balanced with one companion in mind. Each of them have their own quests, commentaries while adventuring and give gifts to you once you completed their tasks. It's actually rewarding to switch out companions here. There used to be a mod which allowed for multiple companions as well. Unsure if that's still around.
Neverwinter Nights 2 on the other hand uppens party size to 3 companions. Plus a semi-companion. Animal companions aren't counted in this party size limit.
This game is 3rd person, however (not isometric) But you don't need to manage your party. They behave because of certain "inclinations". That's a kind of behaviour-program. You can select this for your own. And it will change with time, dependong on YOUR behaviour.
The other 2 have the incinations, the players of them have set. You can see those, if you are in the "hire-room". (a spcial area, called "rift") They won't change. Also you own companion will level with you, the mercenaries won't, so you're forced to change them form time to time. You even only need to equip your self and your own companion. The mercenaries come with armor and weapons of there own. If you equip any of this on them, this is considered a gift to the owner. You can also hire them on the road. They're just wandering everywhere in the world.
Not a party-based RPG, but still a classic of all time: Vampire Bloodlines. Realy perfect atmoshphere and also a good story. All NPC, which you're interacting with, are extremly good written. (They don't need to be in your party for this.) And they react based on your gender and vampire-class. (Tip: play a nospheratu. You can realy get some laughter with that. Although you have to be invisible alsmost constantly, but you will have several privilegs, and non-common solutions, because of that fact. But Malkavanian is also very funny to play.)
Several unooficial patches and mods are essential for that game, however, because the developer did go down, shortly after the release, sadly.
Vampire is a quest-based RPG. You won't get XP just for killing... (and you shouldn't go and rampage in that game...)
Yes NWN1 is your MC plus one (or two sometimes, I can't remember) henchmen who control themselves :(.
NWN2 is excellent, very much party based, lot's of fleshed out companions etc. If a classic party based fantasy cRPG is your main bag I'd edef play this one. It has two expansions. Mask of the Betrayer is generally rated better than the base game and it's high level(about level 15-30 IIRC) so it's actually very similar to Pathfinder, being 3.5e and all. The second expansion is like IWD, you build your own party from scratch and heavily skewed to munchkin multi-classing, again a bit like Pathfinder.
Wasteland 3 is very pretty and modern and all, but I rate Wasteland 2 as the real classic game. WL2 feels bigger and more dangerous plus it has three of the most spectacularly brilliant areas ever designed for a cRPG: the Rail Nomads, Canyon of Titan and Hollywood. The sheer scale and complexity of these areas, the amazing intertwining narrative/quests, and the amazing imagination put into them are breathtaking. All the other areas are merely excellent.
Dragonfall is the best one by most folks measure. Hong Kong has some nice game play improvements but Dragonfall edges it on story and companions. Not by a lot, just a bit.
Expeditions: Rome:
I comment on some of the issues you mentioned on this one in my review which you can read here:
https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198062702626/recommended/
[second review down after Vikings - couldn't work out how to link the specific review]
If you follow my advice on the two main problems folks have with it you'll be fine and every other aspect of the game is pretty excellent.
Admittedly I'm a big fan of these Expeditions games, but I think most everyone who's played Rome has really enjoyed it.
Of course if one look on Wasteland shoudl consider also Fallout serie.
Other than that titles that you can definitely check
- UnderRail
- Age of Decadence
- The Bard's Tale
- Disco Elysium
- Avernum
You can open whole new area with japan style crpgs (Final fanatsy serie, etc..) or go mote tactical games way too (DruidStone, Banner Saga, eventually X-com...)
Beside there was Shadows of untertide as standalone adventure.
In base game and Shadows you have 1 companion in Hordes of Underdark 2. Also only in expansion packs you have more influence on their equipment and leveling progress, but ye, in general it is not exactly party.
Still it is damn classic:) and very close to KOTOR in DnD.
Dunno about all dlcs in Enhanced edition I suspect msot of them be standalone adventures of their own.
I dare to say it is even better as far as story go, but it is bit more openworld where you explore more "half-empty" locations on map, while in BG2 each single zone was filled much more. it is bit more adventure and not first hand "epic", also low level charcters fight and die to kobolds and wolves, not exactly starting as god child...
It would be just strange start with 2 first story wise
