Playful Darkness
Why do people complain about this boss so much? If you build Ember right she can two turn it with hellfire ray and some mediocre rolls. Do people really try and Leroy it with melee characters? Is that why people get pissed off?

I think its because the game balance is all over the place.
The same fight can be extreemly hard or extreemly easy.

There is a reason a lot of people are looking up min max builds.
The game (and this is a pathfinder problem) has many trap builds that just ruins your character.

When you are kicking ass and tacking names a random demon that looks like the kind the slaughter several times already suddenly party wiping you because your build wasnt designed around min max tent to piss people off.
I didnt even notice it the first time i killed it but....
I was a lich who reanimated every single demon i killed.
I love being a lich.
Undead overstated demon army for the win.

Because it's a 'rocks fall you die' fight.

Either, you already have a strategy and party comp that's likely work against it (ie you have a ray-caster or someone who can drop large piles of no-save damage on it and summons to screen for a couple rounds)
or
it murders your entire party in like 1.5 rounds.
And there's no way of knowing that's the strategy the game is going to ask you to have until after it dumpsters your entire party.

I owned it with heal spells as I recall.

If i remember correctly, i barely managed to beat it with a party that was not built justto defeat it. Mostly it was some rays and heals. And, if i am not mistaken, the paladin using lay on hands.

I killed it as Sword and Board Mutation Warrior on Angel path. 2nd try, did not prepare because I did not know yet.
MC and Camelia were only ones to fight Darkness and Camelia had 1 Heal scroll that I used to finish him off after MC almost killed him. Daeran was only healing MC.
Rest of the party was "dealing" (getting wiped out more like) with the enemies that ambush you from behind.

Isn't organizing a group that can handle various challenges a part of the game - at least, a part of the game for those that enjoy blind play?
Because he is one of many bad bosses in this game and perfect example of overall balance problems. Sure there are solutions to this fight, including damaging him with healing effects or hellfire cheese but in the end its all the same - buff to stratosphere and use one of devs preffered methods of solving problems. Zero satisfation.

If Rays/Touch are cheese, then 95% of the game is cheese.

Much less so. "B-b-b-but muh touch AC" is simply stupid because not everyone can actually utilize that. Rays, Kinetists, Magus Dimenion Strike and thats pretty much all - when one or two people actually do something in fight while rest just sit and skip turns its simply bad game design.

Now you are just venting. I can say "Not everybody can utilize CC so it is cheese." That is how you sound. It sounds like if you cannot hit it with weapon it is autamoticaly time for you to "cheese" and use spells other than healing.
Also forgot bombs.
Magus, Cleric, Oracle, Wizard, Arcanist, Kinecist, Sorcerer, Alchemist, Eldritch Scroundel, Witch. 9 classes out of 24 in game, which is 38% of classes, so it is very common to have access to Rays, even more when you have Witch, Oracle, Cleric, Wizard and Eldritch Scroundel, 42% of possible comapanions. So that is a lot of things that can utilize Touch AC.

In addition to "Rays, Kinetists, Magus Dimension Strike" plus things pointed out other posts ...

Finnean?? Surely the group has a martial that uses a weapon??? Plus, rumor has it that if you can't clear any boss on unfair as a swift action caster by this point, you're not playing properly. :)

There's nothing wrong with the general sentiment of not liking a game design that seems to put out a lot of difficulty spikes. However, all challenges in this game can be completed with a variety of styles.

Biggest problem to me with playful darkness and such difficulty spikes is that when you build team to defeat them (without summon spam or such tactics) the rest of the game becomes too easy.

and it isn't very satisfying when you have to load because you spend your hellfire rays and such with bad rolls which easily happens

I doubt this applies to those complaining about difficulty spikes. Just in case it is, wouldn't these complaints be a bit hypocritical from someone self imposing a code of conduct for builds?

People do not necessarily place that Pollyanna elf among their party. Even so, they still need to pass through his RELATIVELY low touch AC. AND before that, you need to be lucky to be able to hit him due to his concealment.

If someone reading this, there is only one way to pass this ♥♥♥♥ encounter. First, dispel his ridiculous buffs via greater dispel magic. After that start spamming BALEFUL POLYMORPH and prey for him to roll a natural one. If he doesn't, then return your last load and retry these steps. He will fail his saving throw eventually.
