Warpriest
I have a level 5 Dwarf Warpriest Shieldbearer and he is about to do the Grey Garrison quest when I noticed his weapon attack modifier is only +4 and his shield attack modifier is -2 (yes he comes with the skill shield bash). Is this normal for this class or did I do something wrong in his feats? Is there a way I can make those numbers higher before I do this quest?

do you have the two weapon fighting feat? pretty sure you need that :)

warpriests have 3/4 bab
shield bash counts as dual-wielding and as a result will absolutely kill your attack modifiers unless you also have the two-weapon fighting feat/feats. either disable shield bash until you can invest in two-weapon (which requires 15 dex) or respec if you're not averse to such a thing

using a buckler or light shield instead of a heavy shield would also help slightly, as those are counted as light weapons for the purpose of shield bash/dual wield

warpriest is 3/4 BAB, like magus, rogue and inquisitor, so you're behind a true fighter. That said when using shield bash, you are subject to two weapon fighting penalties, and while you get shield bash for free as a shieldbearer, you must pick the two weapon fighting feat if you don't want to get the -6/-10 penalty from using 2 weapons (so you need to have 15 dex or multiclass some levels to something getting the feat, like a ranger or a slayer).

Unfortunately you can't use a buckler to shield bash. Have to go light shield to get the lesser penalty and still get the bash attack. (Light shield can also take advantage of Weapon Finesse if you're more dex based)

As you mentioned, two weapon fighting is a must for shield bash builds. Definitely a good idea to turn off the Shield Bash toggle until you get the feat.

The best way to start a shieldbearer is to just make a 15 dex char and pick two weapon fighting right away. Otherwise you're just stallign the build (since warpriest rely on sacred weapon to do damage and shieldbearer's sacred weapon is his shield, so you need to shield bash).

Thank you all for your help. I did respec and gave him 15 dex and two weapon fighting and now his modifiers are +6 and +4. Much better than they were before.

Shield Bash counts as Two Weapon Fighting. Shield Bash is also its own weapon type for Weapon Focus, just to warn you.

There are actually multiple weapon focus feat for shield bash, one for each type of shield, spiked shields being also their own type of weapon.

I have a new (unrelated) question to ask about my warpriest and his spells. He is now level 7 and has 14 wisdom (warpriest stat for casting spells) and I was looking at his spell book when I noticed my plans for levelling him might be wrong.
This is my current plan: He only gets up to level 6 spells so all I need is 16 wisdom to get them. At level 8 I would put one point into strength to make it 18. Level 12 one point into wisdom to make it 15. level 13 I get access to level 5 spells. Level 16 one point into wisdom to make it 16. I would also get access to level 6 spells at level 16.
My question is, going with this plan will I actually get access to my level 16 spells right away or will I have to wait till level 17?

As long as the casting stat is high enough, you get immediate access to the spells. Doesn't matter whether the stat is high enough due to base score or thanks to equipment, it still counts.

You dont need to respec, just get a plus 2 or higher Wis headband. All you need to do to get lvl 6 spells.
GreatEagle May 18, 2022 @ 11:13am
Ah ok. I was just wondering if getting my lvl 6 spells at the same time as get my wisdom to lvl 16 was possible but if all I need is a wisdom headband the I don't have to worry. I will definitely get one of those before I reach lvl 16. Thank you all :)

That's true and the same logic holds for TWF, you'd have been better off leaving DEX at 14 and using a +2 belt to qualify.

Yeah I don't know why poeple want to dual wield right out of the gate. You dont have the attack bonus to suffer -4, or -2. Once you have access to buffs, a higher ab, more attacks, by all means start focusing on it.

Shield bearers interestingly enough can weapon focus in 4 shields. Light shield, light spiked shield, heavy shield, heavy spiked shield. Make sure you are using what you choose. This may be an issue you are facing with bad attack bonus.

You also don't have to shield bash, there is a toggle to turn it off. I also have a Dwarf Shieldbearer and he's not a basher.
