Not really, you need a unit that can wipe out a squad of enemy troops more than you need one that can take a hit. It's only really an issue against mage generals.

Dude, Bard crusade units are useles. Here is why:
Bards have low initiative (2), meaning they go after both Marksmen and Rangers who both have 4 initiative. So in first round, shooters are not going to get buffed, unless you delay your shooters. And you don't want to delay shooters turn, because it allows enemy units to survive longer, and possibly deal more damage to you.
Also, +3 to attack is not much at the point when you get bards. Espetialy for Marksmen that relibly hit most enemy anyway.
Actualy, i am not mad that Bards are useles. It's kind of DnD meme.
