AFAIK, that's Uncle Owl kinda mocking the use of such things in other games.
As for me, like you, I like them, seems like a neat feature for BG3. Be cool to have exploding barrels next to archers you can ignite by hitting the barrels. But nope.
A lot of people like talking about how this is a "tactical" game. Well, they definitely are not big into one thing I see as defining that - how to use the environment to your advantage. Let alone utilize elements of it.
The environment plays zero role in Crusade battles, too. OK, other than a tree or rock you might have to go around. <rolleyes>
