Science must be done (said Areelu the Witch
Still waiting on mine. Q1 2022. GabeN (hollowed be thy name) must have checked that I'm not actually playing much of anything anymore, so other people deserve to get it first. Then again, Q1 is not over yet...
Of course you have to figure out the controls situation because we still don't have controller support for Wrath and controller support like Kingmaker has would instantly solve that problem. Some combination of input devices would probably work... I've found that an S Pen combined with a small bluetooth keypad is enough to play most CRPGs that don't have controller support.
I know it's probably too late for OP, but I'd highly highly recommend Nvidia Shield streaming over a Steam deck to anyone if your setup and planned usage can support it (using the Moonlight app to stream with Nvidia Shield is free and very easy to use). I literally get 10ms of latency, which is completely imperceptible, so it's like there's no latency at all. No problem with Steam compatibility issues, no fan running on the deck, no tiny screen issues, and no waiting for the delayed deck to come out. You can do the sound and input on either device/pc, so you have options there and there's no input lag.
I'm extremely glad I canceled my deck preorder and got a tablet upgrade instead. I can easily stream to my tv as well, but obviously the tablet is a little more mobile and allows the use of an S Pen which effectively acts like a mouse.
If you've ever tried streaming in the past with poor latency, it might be time to try again.
Ok mine's coming Q2 so please let me know...
Thanks!
The good news is that it works. I haven't gotten much game time as I've been fiddling with setting up the controls to my liking.
The bad news is... I wouldn't consider it playable.
The game engine is doing something really double-plus-ungood with the hardware. It chews through the battery like nothing else I've tested thus far, at unholy >=21 watts, and that's clamped at 30 fps. I'm going to see which graphics settings can be lowered to help. The default configuration is not going to cut it. Not if you don't want to kill your Deck's battery.
The best comparison I have is DOS2:EE, which tops out at 16W. More science will be done along these lines when I get an SD card to put, for example, BG3 on.
This goes hand in hand with quite regular complaints (including some of mine) that the engine has serious issues, probably inherited from Unity. Some other Unity games I've tried on this thing have displayed similar power-chomping issues. The differentiating factor is that for some folks their hardware is already teetering on the edge, and so shutdowns, restarts or other mysterious errors happen. Technically it is a problem of people's hardware. But really, the game should not be doing the equivalent of Prime95, too.
There are other issues, too. Like I predicted, it's just not a good fit for this form factor. The UI is too small. Even at font size 1.2 all the text will strain your eyes. Status effects are too small entirely. I couldn't get mouse-wheel scrolling to work (but that's probably on me).
More science will be done, but it doesn't look rosy.
So, currently it's a PITA, but when/if the console release of Wrath rolls in, it'll be ok.
But seriously, folks, this is not OK:

At this point the battery discharges faster than the Deck's wall charger could possibly keep up. That is not healthy for the battery. I've dropped it to Low and it's still doing that. Also, note the temperatures. The room is 18 degrees, window is open. The Deck's new, the vents are not yet clogged with dust.
If this is not fixed for the console release (and fix backported to PC), so that PS4 and Xbox fans go whrrr, I'd say Sony and MS, respectively, should refuse the certification.
Kingmaker tops out at 14W.
Wasteland 3, similarly a rather locust-plagued Unity production, somehow tops out at 13W.
Mutant Year Zero (UE4) tops out at 17W, but averages less.
What is this game doing?
