Steam Deck comparability?
Does this currently work on Steam Deck?

Thanks!

I just checked compatibility and it says that WoTR is filed under playable, but may require some tweaks.
The Store page does say that, but I think it understates how ill-suited these kinds of games are for small screens. In some games small text is a bit of annoyance. This game requires *lots of reading* (unless you already know it by heart).
Science must be done (said Areelu the Witch :Owlcat_tongue:), so I just changed to 1280x800 to check. It's passable, but then the PPI of the Deck is 2x more than that of my screen. Plan builds, fool around? Sure. Play for considerable amounts of time? Not so sure about that.

Still waiting on mine. Q1 2022. GabeN (hollowed be thy name) must have checked that I'm not actually playing much of anything anymore, so other people deserve to get it first. Then again, Q1 is not over yet...

Hmm wonder if they will include a lager font for the deck?

If you want to play this and be mobile/handheld, I think you're better off using Nvidia Shield to stream to a tablet/device with a decent sized screen. (That is, the free gamestream option in GeForce Experience software, not the Shield hardware.)

Of course you have to figure out the controls situation because we still don't have controller support for Wrath and controller support like Kingmaker has would instantly solve that problem. Some combination of input devices would probably work... I've found that an S Pen combined with a small bluetooth keypad is enough to play most CRPGs that don't have controller support.

I know it's probably too late for OP, but I'd highly highly recommend Nvidia Shield streaming over a Steam deck to anyone if your setup and planned usage can support it (using the Moonlight app to stream with Nvidia Shield is free and very easy to use). I literally get 10ms of latency, which is completely imperceptible, so it's like there's no latency at all. No problem with Steam compatibility issues, no fan running on the deck, no tiny screen issues, and no waiting for the delayed deck to come out. You can do the sound and input on either device/pc, so you have options there and there's no input lag.

I'm extremely glad I canceled my deck preorder and got a tablet upgrade instead. I can easily stream to my tv as well, but obviously the tablet is a little more mobile and allows the use of an S Pen which effectively acts like a mouse.

If you've ever tried streaming in the past with poor latency, it might be time to try again.

WotR luckily already comes with a setting to scale font size. The question is whether the max font size of 1.2 will be comfortable enough to read on the deck. I'm sheduled to receive mine in Q1 and certainly will try it out playing WotR on it.

Ok mine's coming Q2 so please let me know...

Thanks!
So... I've taken it for a spin.
The good news is that it works. I haven't gotten much game time as I've been fiddling with setting up the controls to my liking.
The bad news is... I wouldn't consider it playable.

The game engine is doing something really double-plus-ungood with the hardware. It chews through the battery like nothing else I've tested thus far, at unholy >=21 watts, and that's clamped at 30 fps. I'm going to see which graphics settings can be lowered to help. The default configuration is not going to cut it. Not if you don't want to kill your Deck's battery.

The best comparison I have is DOS2:EE, which tops out at 16W. More science will be done along these lines when I get an SD card to put, for example, BG3 on.

This goes hand in hand with quite regular complaints (including some of mine) that the engine has serious issues, probably inherited from Unity. Some other Unity games I've tried on this thing have displayed similar power-chomping issues. The differentiating factor is that for some folks their hardware is already teetering on the edge, and so shutdowns, restarts or other mysterious errors happen. Technically it is a problem of people's hardware. But really, the game should not be doing the equivalent of Prime95, too.

There are other issues, too. Like I predicted, it's just not a good fit for this form factor. The UI is too small. Even at font size 1.2 all the text will strain your eyes. Status effects are too small entirely. I couldn't get mouse-wheel scrolling to work (but that's probably on me).

More science will be done, but it doesn't look rosy.

There are certain games that I think adapt well to handhelds and mobile devices like the Steam Deck. First person shooters, etc. I suspect the Steam Deck isn't good for most CRPGs, at least those not of the ARPG type.

Not necessarily. Kingmaker has a good console UI. I would still choose turn-based, because snap-to-target and sequential action select is slower than using mouse and the numbers row. And status effects are still too small, but perhaps one can learn most of them by color :)

So, currently it's a PITA, but when/if the console release of Wrath rolls in, it'll be ok.

But seriously, folks, this is not OK:

At this point the battery discharges faster than the Deck's wall charger could possibly keep up. That is not healthy for the battery. I've dropped it to Low and it's still doing that. Also, note the temperatures. The room is 18 degrees, window is open. The Deck's new, the vents are not yet clogged with dust.

If this is not fixed for the console release (and fix backported to PC), so that PS4 and Xbox fans go whrrr, I'd say Sony and MS, respectively, should refuse the certification.

Kingmaker tops out at 14W.
Wasteland 3, similarly a rather locust-plagued Unity production, somehow tops out at 13W.
Mutant Year Zero (UE4) tops out at 17W, but averages less.

What is this game doing?
