Impenetrable darkness? What do you mean by that?
Yes, it is intended. Though I can understand why it must look confusing when you compare it with other maps. Other maps have that too. You just do not see them due smart cutouts. Like: minimaps shows just a cutout, while the map you are walking on is actually part of something bigger - they are just closed by "imprenetrable darkness" which act as borders.
Yeah, that happens in some maps. Partially due to loading issues. Partially due to broken borders. Once my party was so far off the screen, I did not know what to make of the situation. But then it was such a rare encounter, maybe it is just an oversight in design.
In those cases it is best to let the developers know about it and ignore it safely, unless it is progress blocking. Letting the developers know about such issues is usually done in 10-20 seconds by writing a line via the bug reporting tool ALT+B, describing what seems off in that particular area.
