They set you up with Mind Fog which is countered by Life Bubble and there are various items and abilities throughout the game that give immunities/bonuses against mind-affecting, compulsion, etc...

Another thing they messed up with/did not include/do right in Turn Based.
Having a bard in a party will also drastically improve your saves.
A spell clears mind affecting effect in an area around the caster and clears spirit related ability drains, can't remember the name, available on clerics, oracle (Daeran), bard.
Paladin's lay on hand can clear confusion if you choose so when leveling.
On my last game with a dirge bard merc main companion of my MC, on hard with shake it off and her singing, 99% of mind controls against my party fail.
