Question about the end of Midnight Fane (spoilers)
After the final battle, the Queen reviews your performance. As I understand it, you will keep the title of Commander if she doesn't have too many problems with your performance. How many "failures" will she allow you to have and still let you stay in charge?

As it was, I think my main failure points were entering the Fane without her (Azata path), having Arueshalae as a companion (I think I talked her out of that though) and not returning to the entrance of the Fane to help the defenders (I think I overlooked a second horn calling me back to help).

What exactly is the benefit of still being the commander when I return from the Abyss anyway?

As far as I am aware just a slightly different alternative story. Nothing to bother about. I recommend to ignore every alternative possibilities while you being on your current journey. You can enjoy alternate stuff next time much better in fullest instead of spoiling your current playthrough and future playthrough with questioning every action you doing.

It is an adventure after all. So ~ enjoy your adventure! ^.^

You can't fail in anything. If you're following a mythic path she doesn't like, that's it, you're done. That's not including if you make choices she doesn't like (using the vescavors in act 2, failing to convince her about Arue, etc.) Put simply, you are going to fail her review more often than you won't. I think you might get a free pass if you're romancing her, or if you're an Angel. The Aeon path also doesn't upset her, so Aeons have a chance to succeed if you don't do anything else to upset her.

The main benefit is that Irabeth will stay behind instead of going with the queen in act 5- since you're still officially the "commander", her duty is with you and she can stay behind for you with a clear conscience. The benefit for this is there's no risk of Irabeth dying in Iz.

But I also agree with this. Don't scramble to try and "fix" it or get the best outcome. I understand wanting to figure out how the game works behind the scenes, because I like to do that too, but it's better to be willing to roll with the flow than doing the incredibly hyper-specific things required to get the "best" outcome with everything.

Looks like I'm out of luck. I tried it again - the only complaints she had was my changing the banner, not waiting for her and having Arueshalae as a companion (again, I evaded that with persuasion).

On that note, if I used either chaotic option to let Minagho go free, is there anything significant that happens with her later on?

I know I'm late, but there is a side quest in chapter 4

Incorrect, there's a side quest and a solution to one of the harder choices you have to make that lets you have it both ways that gets closed off by not staying commander. You gotta be either really good and wait for her to arrive, or really lawful and have made decisions she approves of.
