Why don't many NPC's have portraits?
Aside from companions and a small handful of NPC's, almost nobody has portraits. I get this if it were a beta, but for a release game?
Any NPC with a name and presence in multiple acts should have a portrait. In particular, Hilor, Suture, Liotr, Zacharias, Terendelev, Lariel, Soconthbenoth, Liotr. I even remember fighting some named villians whose portrait was just their letters (I'll watch for it in my next playthrough).
I'm sure this list is incomplete; any others that are in serious need of a portrait? Is there a mod that gives them portraits?

Time and money, and maybe, there were mods for it in KM, so probably for this game too. Check nexus mods. If no mod exists yet, IDK.

For Kingmaker a mod exists. Not yet for Wrath of the Righteous. It is also a matter of costs for the developers.

Same reason only a handful of conversations are voiced, it costs time and money that the studio doesn't have, and alot of people underestimate the cost of these things.

yeah, have you seen prices on art comissions of this quality? it's, like, 100-300$ and more
Cutlass Jack Oct 24, 2021 @ 6:51pm
Honestly the money would be better spent giving more player portraits.

Those are crazy easy to get. I use these two "mods": WotR[www.nexusmods.com] and this one from Kingmaker[www.nexusmods.com]
There's surprisingly little overlap.

Edit: To be perfectly clear, I am suggesting this for Cutlass Jack's personal use, not for Owlcat to plagiarize.

What kind of game studio commisions art assets? It's not like voice acting; game studios tend to have 2D artists on retainer.

Owlcat's fans come up with some really bizarre, illogical excuses to defend shortcomings in their games. It's like some people think Owlcat consists of 3 dudes making games in their parents' garage; they're not that indie.

There's nothing bizarre or illogical said by the people you are quoting.
Besides, most characters who matter and appear in more than a quest or two do have portraits. Though it would be nice if important secondary NPCs from different mythic paths also got them.

Doesn't Owlcat only have like, 50 people or thereabouts? That's pretty tiny for a game studio, especially one that makes these kinds of massive RPGs.

Exactly, a studio of 60 people, yet these deluded apologists would have you believe Owlcat can't afford full-time artists, and are instead commissioning those character portraits for $300 a pop. I work for a studio smaller than Owlcat, and even we have an art department.

"They just don't have enough money" is not the reason for every single fault in WotR. Setting unrealistic deadlines, scope-creep, being in bed with a publisher; none of these could possibly be the cause of any of WotR's problems. Clearly we the players just didn't Kickstart Owlcat-senpai hard enough.

Can't argue with that, I guess. Still, these are pretty massive games, so there's probably more important things to do besides making sure every semi-relevant character in the game has their own portrait.

I've wondered that before. I can only assume it's a time factor, or their artists are needed on other things. Whoever they have that does the portraits does a really good job.
SmallGespenst Oct 24, 2021 @ 9:28pm
art takes work, the artists were probably busy with y'know, game assets. textures, models, that kind of stuff.

I doubt the artists that draw the portraits are the same people that do 3D modelling. It's more likely Owlcat didn't think it was a big deal more named characters don't have portraits so giving them that feedback for their next game might have them re-evaluate it.
