Depends on the class you play.

Witch/hex Magus can use evil eye.
Cleric, bane, doom... do they work on elementals? I cannot remember.
If you have a stealth character you can sneak past the elemental to get what you need.
Lann should use perfect shot for the battle.
Power attack to do damage

It's armour class is not very high so defensive fighting can be good.
Camillia has enlarge person, more damage.
Pulling out a two handed weapon just for this fight can be good because the damage reduction is the biggest problem.

The Water Elemental is an optional miniboss, you don't have to fight it to get through the maze.

I also made liberal use of Camellia's entaglement, then pelt him with ranged - he was half dead by the time he waddled over to my frontline.

Thank you all

Also, you get a potion of frost resistance from a chest earlier on, which reduces the elemental's damage substantially.

I had thought that water elementals were supposed to hit with bludgeoning?

this boss is f ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. i stack buffs on the paladin and she'll just get one shotted after a while.
be it after 2,3,5, hits. its gonna happen.
whoever says they beat it are on story mode.

Why necro an old post just to post bad advice.

Easily beat in RTWP using missile weapons and bate.

Well there's an achievement that says you killed it on Core or higher
I got lucky. In this game luck plays a factor because of dice.
I've redone fights where the whole party got killed, and next everyone survives with barely a scratch making crits over and over

The way to beat the cheating Kobayashi Maru test is to cheat back at it.

For me, the most reliable way to kill the water elemental on Core difficulty or below (I dunno about higher difficulties) is to stack a few potion buffs like Barkskin or Shield of faith on your best tank, which is either Seelah or your MC, put them on defensive fighting mode and send them alone against the water elemental while Camellia spams the Protective luck Hex on them (much easier to do on TB mode). Other characters must stay away to avoid the elemental using cleave and attack either at range (easy for Lann/Wenduag) or with a reach weapon like one of the magic glaives availables around (easy for Seelah if your MC is tanking).

It's not immune to prone, so Grease spell works just fine. It's actually amusing how pathetic that elemental gets on Core once it fails a saving throw. I suggest buffing Seelah's AC and bait it, and then cast the spell when it picks a spot to stand in. Enlarging your main damage dealer also helps. Just make sure you don't enlarge Seelah, because it will harm her AC. There's no need to use potions or scrolls for that fight. PL hex is indeed also a thing.

Easiest way is to kite it with ranged attacker with composite bow. It has very low speed and composite bow can reliably damage him. Works even on unfair. Works best for Lann do his high speed
Grease is actually rather bad way to deal with him due to his rather high reflex saves at that point. Even with maxxed CC specialist under intimidate+evil eye he saves quite a lot on hard or higher.

Well this is necroed, poeple may still look this up, so ill contribute. The easiest way to beat the water elemental, is to use the potions you find in the maze.

1: Have your tank drink the potion of cold protection.

2: Have your best damage dealer drink a potion of enlarge person, potion of haste. Either have camelia use an arcane bond and use bulls stregnth on them, or use bull stregnth from the scroll. Give them heroism from the scroll you find.

3: Whoever the tank is, keep spamming them with protective luck. With a beefed up damage dealer with haste potion, the water elemental will go down quickly.

The tank can be a pet, or seelah. If the tank is a pet, you can make the damage dealer seelah with a glaive, your character, Lann, or Wenduag.
