Might depend on how good your hardware is, what you have, and (if it's a custom rig) how the different components interact with each other. This game isn't the most optimized in some ways and makes even top notch systems run hot.

Seems like I should be crushing video settings, but as some of you say, it's not super well optimized.
The default recommendation is an automatic recognition of your standardised computer components. There is nothing wrong if you make alteration, whether it is one way or another. It can improve the gaming experience for those who got a high setting recommended when reducing some settings. It can as well improve the gaming experience for those who got a low setting recommended when increasing some settings.
Consider it just a recommendation which is not nearly close to 80% accurate.
